To my new followers here: Greetings! I’m a radar meteorologist who studies tornadoes & storms. I also study field work impacts on atmospheric science students’ learning & career aspirations (Fig. 1). Outside work, I’m a mom, spouse of @meteodan.bsky.social, cyclist, painter, & ham (WX0RT).
Travel with care, friends. #HappyThanksgiving
In the north-central U.S., a storm will bring heavy snow and gusty to high winds over parts of the northern Plains and Upper Midwest today before moving across the Great Lakes with heavy lake effect snow Wednesday into Thanksgiving Day.

I am literally at a Scouting meeting right now with my older son. He and his friends are learning to tie knots from an older Scout. In another room, another Scout is being ranked by a board of review.

The characterization of scouting by P— H— in this article does not comport with reality.

Impressive Bureau of Meteorology radar loop of Severe Tropical Cyclone Fina, which BOM estimates has sustained winds of ~130 mph, I.e. major hurricane intensity. It is forecast by BOM to weaken slightly as it approaches the northeast Kimberley coast over the next 24 hours.

A horrific accident early Saturday morning left a car in the side of an NWS office and the office relying on the NWS service backup system. Service backup is important in situations like this - but also is being increasingly used due to NWS staffing and infrastructure issues. tinyurl.com/4txuyhbz
Tragic vehicle accident takes an NWS office offline
Looking at how the NWS offices back each other up. Severe weather and flash flooding in the south central US next couple of days.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary scrutiny. This record wind gust measured by a drop sonde seems to have passed the test.
Hurricane Melissa produced the fastest hurricane winds to be recorded by a dropsonde, verified by reviewing data at NSF NCAR! Hurricane Melissa’s 252 mph wind gust surpassed the previous record from Typhoon Megi over the Western Pacific in 2010, where a dropsonde measured wind gusts of 248 mph.

A “lost” tornado from 2011 was surveyed and confirmed 14+ years later by NWS Birmingham. They wrote, “It is important to correct the record for both accuracy and credibility.”

A good reminder that hazardous weather doesn't care what the calendar says. If the atmospheric conditions come together, severe weather and flooding can happen any time!

Working in Dr. Howie Bluestein’s lab was one of the greatest privileges of my life. I am humbled to be part of the elite club of his former grad students. We celebrated his career and retirement last night at the NWC.

To my UNL colleagues, I am so sorry your university chose to sacrifice you on the Altar of Lunacy.
University of Nebraska announced yesterday a final budget plan which if approved by regents would result in elimination of its earth and atmospheric sciences program. I worry that this is a sign of a trend that could damage the academic meteorology sector of the US. More: tinyurl.com/53b5f5j7

They are really planning to go through with these cuts at Nebraska, despite recommendations not to. Unbelievable.

If you want to hire highly qualified, very successful earth and atmospheric sciences faculty in teaching and research, quite a few are probably looking for jobs for next year.

IMO, the proposed bill to end the shutdown to me puts NOAA in a state of limbo til Jan. 30 with little hope for clarity even then. I breakdown my admittedly pessimistic interpretation of the situation and recap the competing admin and Congressional visions for NOAA: https://tinyurl.com/49dhaf56

I like big fronts and I cannot lie.
A strong cold front this weekend will put the "ber" in November as frigid air spills out across the Plains and Mississippi Valley. This winter-like chill will flood across the eastern half of the country early next week, bringing the potential for record cold temperatures to the Gulf by Tuesday.
