Current Top 40 Hits

I love books, movies, videos games, food, cocktails, music and my husband. Check out my "Current Top 40 Hits" playlist on Spotify. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1Pmipj5TBHHW9zDwwTeeo5
Loved this destination! Because it was the first year I paid attention to the charts, I have a special fondness for 1990. I actually have an episode of Casey's Top 40 on vinyl--it's the equivalent chart-week for either the week you posted or the week after, as 35 of the 40 songs are the same.

I got it for Christmas in 1989 (along with Paula Abdul and Milli Vanilli). It remains one of my favorite albums of the '80s. "Escapade" was an obvious single and a fun song, although I preferred the harder-hitting dance tracks like "Miss You Much" and the title track.

When I first started listening to popular music in 1987, it was on cassette--until I got my first CD player in 1993. During that time, I only wore out one tape and needed a replacement. That was Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814. Such a brilliant album.

I didn't love this song back in 1990. I think because it was so different. But looking back, I think it's brilliant. A really striking song. Such a shame she became a one-hit wonder (so many of those in 1990 actually). In Canada, I believe her other singles did much better.

Taylor Dayne's hit streak ended too soon, IMO. I really enjoyed her remake of "Can't Get Enough of Your Love." This song--her only #1 hit--was fantastic. As was its followup, "I'll Be Your Shelter, " which I remember Rick Dees describing it as Tina Turner-inspired--a fitting description.

These guys were so hot with "When I See You Smile," and then slipped away so fast. This follow-up was OK, but I never really got into them.

I know "Another Day in Paradise" was But Seriously's massive hit single, but I actually prefer this second single. I love its big dramatic sound. Another one that I sent to #1 on my personal chart despite not reach #1 on the Hot 100 or R&R top 40.

And beyond her 1990-91 peak, she continued to make great music, even if it didn't chart well. "Moments of Love" from her second album is a beautiful ballad. And her 1996 collab with Guy Chambers, "Don't Take My Heaven," is a undiscovered gem IMO.

I'm a little bit obsessed with Cathy Dennis. I think she's incredibly talented, as evidenced by her long songwriting career. But I love her performing days too. This song is great, although the 3 top 10 singles from her album that came out later in 1990 were even better.

I feel like "Dangerous" is sort of forgotten among Roxette singles, despite hitting #2. I LOVE it. It's got great energy to it.

This song is absolutely STUNNING. It should've gone to #1, but it came out during a very competitive time of the year. The Affection albums is fantastic and I became a big Lisa Stansfield fan because of this song.

I like Richard Marx, but this one never did much for me.

RIP Tommy. 😢

Like a Prayer is my favorite album from the '80s. Every song on it is great and so different. "Keep It Together," while being the last single, is no exception.

It is an absolutely TRAVESTY of the top 40 chart that "No Myth" didn't reach the top 10. It's such a great song. I put at #1 on my personal chart for a week back in 1990. Still sounds great.

I LOVED Technotronic in 1990! I got the Pump Up the Jam album. I remember this was the song where they gave Ya Kid K her due and quit pretending that "Felly" was a band member.

I was obsessed with Paula Abdul in 1989 and 1990 (I mean, who wasn't?!). I LOVED this song when it came out, although it's one of my less favorite singles from her now. I thought it was cool that she remixed most of her songs for the single releases--this one more so than the others.

This is a lovely song, and the first song I ever knew by Luther Vandross. It's amazing to me that 35 years later, the most popular song is a tribute to him.

I like this song, but I like "Don't Know Much" better. It was an interesting choice for her to put out back-to-back duets with Aaron Neville.

This song rocks! Still sounds so good today. And a great one-hit wonder!

I got the Cut Both Ways album around the time "Here We Are" was a big hit. Gloria Estefan had a glorious streak of top 10 hits from 1986-91. Really love her.

Interesting! I went to college in a small town, but it had a top 40 station, so I had a good alternative to the campus station (which, being in the PNW is the mid 90s was very much all alternative).

Seems when give the choice, we chose "nothing." 😜

Such a great metal ballad. My favorite song by Motley Crue.

I wasn't yet a Depeche Mode fan when "Personal Jesus" was charting, but their next single, "Enjoy the Silence" really drew me in. Violator is such a great album--top 2 (with Sinead O'Connor) for 1990 for me.
