Jack Nicholson passed on The Sting (1973)—calling it “too commercial”—so he could star in a script penned by his close friend Robert Towne. Ironically, both he and Robert Redford (who took the role) ended up competing for Best Actor at the '73 Oscars… and both lost to Jack Lemmon in Save the Tiger.
