Delighted to see that the great Mark Cocker has chosen ‘Just Earth’ to include in the Spectator’s Books Of The Year round up. What a good place for that book to be highlighted.

Wonderful to be at the Wild Summit today. A real sense of common cause across a vast range of organisations & people. I said that Nature can be recovered, if we bring people & diverse sectors together in partnerships, integrate policy & foster a Nature positive culture, & it’s already starting.

So good to see Sir Partha Dasgupta & to chat about his excellent 2021 report for HM Treasury on the economic value of Nature. Striking to hear from this world-leading economist about the limitations of conventional economics & the concept of ‘growth’ as we degrade Earth’s systems

One more step for Nature recovery in England marked with an extension to the Ingleborough National Nature Reserve in Yorkshire. This beautiful area hosts a wealth of scarce wildlife. The Natural England team is very proud to work with such wonderful partners in making this happen.

England’s newest National Nature Reserve is declared: Stiperstones Landscape in Shropshire. 11th of 25 NNRs to be declared in the King’s Series, this one is over 1500 hectares of heath, woods, grassland & bog set atop dramatic geology. Thanks to all partners for this landmark moment.

An uplifting event today at Warwickshire Wildlife Trust’s Brandon Marsh nature reserve to celebrate progress made via the most recent round of Species Recovery Programme funding disbursed by Natural England. Thanks to the many partners & volunteers who are delivering practical impact on the ground.

Into the field today with colleagues from Natural England & Anglian Water to visit locations around the proposed Fen Reservoir. Good to discuss how improving water security can go hand-in-hand with Nature Recovery & local social benefits. Evidently much potential for big gains.

Fascinating visit with Natural England colleagues to the vast Sizewell C construction site in Suffolk. Impressive progress being made in integrating Nature recovery with development. Major infrastructure for low carbon, while at the same time going high Nature. It can be done.

Great to join Natural England colleagues at Langford Lowfields by the River Trent to see how a partnership between TarmacLtd & RSPB is transforming the impact of sand & gravel extraction to benefit Nature. Many lessons as to how new housing & infrastructure can be harnessed for Nature recovery

I shall be joining Hello Magazine for a live podcast as part of London Climate Action Week. Among other things I expect to discuss HM King Charles’s contributions on ecological themes (which are many, varied & of great importance).

Wonderful to visit Achurch Meadow with colleagues from Floodplain Meadow Partnership, Natural England & Environment Agency. Vivid reminder of the HUGE importance of such places, for biodiversity, clean rivers, flood storage, carbon & more. 99% is gone, but massive opportunities for restoration.

Three species of damselfly have emerged from our small garden pond, & are now laying eggs in there. Such beauty, colour & grace is a vivid reminder of the power of freshwater to boost biodiversity, even in the heart of a city. Much else in there as well, including Smooth Newts & Common Frogs.

West Dorset & Brit Valley Landscape Recovery project. Sustainable farming, more natural rivers, fewer floods, more wildlife & more connections to Nature for many more people. Thank you West Dorset Wilding for showing me & Natural England colleagues your plans for Nature recovery at scale.

Natural England is delighted today to declare England’s newest National Nature Reserve: the Bradford Pennine Gateway NNR. 1200 hectares of priority habitats on the doorstep of tens of thousands of people, many with limited access to high quality natural areas.

Finally, it’s publication day!

I do hope ‘Just Earth’ will help draw attention to connections between some of the most pressing challenges of our day - namely inequality & ecological crisis.
March 13, 2025 at 9:37 AM
‘Just Earth’ is published next week (13th). Various events will follow, at which I will explore the themes it covers, & explain why social inequality is the biggest environmental issue of all. Do come along & I will sign a copy for you.

From today until Monday Waterstones is offering ‘Just Earth’ at 25% off on prepublication orders.

I have in my hand a first printed copy of ‘Just Earth’. Holding the finished article always a big landmark in the life of a book & I’m delighted to see what a great production job the team at Bloomsbury have done. Published March 13th.

I published these 10 & 12 years ago, when it seemed that frames like ‘get rid of the green crap’ & environmental groups being lumped into an ‘anti-growth coalition’ were on their way out. Truth is though that there is no growth on a polluted & degraded planet. Perhaps I’ll write new editions.

Phew! Just completed recording the audio version of ‘Just Earth’. Four days in the studio, so quite a Marathon. Nice to have it in three formats though, with print and electronic versions. It goes to press next week, so that’s it now before March publication by Bloomsbury Continuum.

Marvellous to join a field visit to Boothby Wildlands Landscape Recovery project in Lincolnshire with colleagues from Natural England, Environment Agency, Forestry England & Defra, to learn of brilliant ambitions for Nature recovery being led there by Nattergal. Real Nature recovery in action.

Pleased to join important conversation with with Duncan Wilson (Historic England) & Shanaz Gulzar (Bradford City of Culture) on ways we might do better for Nature, culture, historic environment & people via more joined-up approaches. Important point: start with synergies before trade-offs.

I was struck this morning by the sense of dire urgency expressed by Dame Glenys Stacey, Chair of the @OfficeforEP, on the need to quickly ramp up efforts to get on track to meet legally binding Nature goals. Time is running out, & so is Nature.
