I think that's possible. Cognition is only one part of things, though. I had a lifetime position in science if I wanted to stay. I don't think I'm in (much) cognitive decline yet. But I retired when I decided I was becoming obsolete. There's a time to let young people with different ideas take over.

What alternative do you propose? Some people can look in the mirror and know their time has come, others delude themselves and can't voluntarily give up whatever power they have or the perks of their position. For every Sanders, there's a Biden, a Granger, a Feinstein. (Also true of academia.)
