As much as any US president, Carter strove to overcome the US "hegemonic presumption" in Latin America.That's not to whitewash a complicated presidency. But in a week when the incoming US president has threatened Panama and demanded the return of the Canal, the difference could hardly be sharper.

Farewell to Jimmy Carter, who strove to use power in the service of principle and public good to an extent uncommon among world leaders.

I studied under Carter's NSC director for Latin America, protege, and friend Bob Pastor. I got to meet the former president briefly on a couple of occasions.

To close the year, I'd like to share some of my publications from 2024. If I could give any advice, it would be this: find yourself such fantastic co-authors and co-editors, and this line of work can be a real joy. Happy holidays and best wishes for 2025!
