The contrast with China is also interesting. Coal generation is also down so far this year in China, but electricity demand is still growing strongly.

If it wasn't China now, it would be India or Indonesia in a few years. As technology capacity diffuses to developing countries, the rents the West has earned from owning more advanced technology are going to decline.

Something I've been thinking is that gross output is a qualitative measure, given it depends on a deflator which is based on qualitative judgement. Is that right?
