A really lovely discovery amongst the new wines just arrived in ALDI for Spring/Summer. Bulgarian pink, very dry with raspberry and red currant fruit - from the Greek end of the Thracian Valley and, not surprisingly delicious with a Greek salad. A mere €8.99!

Planted in early February, this is first early potato Home Guard in the tunnel today. Immensely satisfying, even though there will be quite a wait until harvest...

Beef "olives" stuffed with sausage meat, breadcrumbs, thyme, Worcestershire sauce, a touch of mustard. Sauce is cider, fresh tomatoes, red pepper, onion, celery, garlic, smoked paprika and a big chunk of butter. Very vaguely inspired by Jane Grigson's Hereford beef olives...

I think with steak a good red - maybe the one pictured below - is always a good bet especially if we're talking garlic butter or peppercorn sauce. Generally, though, I think whites are much more versatile with food, especially cheese. He's one that will work well with fish and lots more...

Hi Vicky Lucky him! If it's on the creamy side - say with coconut - you can't go wrong with this offbeat Portuguese white. More robust dishes? Maybe this plump, fruity red? #AldiWineClinic

Hi Mick That sounds like my kind of food! If you like New World wines this Shiraz is a splendidly old-fashioned Oz wine with lots of pepper. Otherwise, I'd be thinking of a fairly luscious Bordeaux like this claret... Both a tenner. #AldiWineClinic

A lovely one. This is the bottle. It's €11.99 and a complete bargain! #AldiWineClinic

Hi Paddy That was such a fabulous wine! And such a bargain! I think you might enjoy this Alsace version - I know I do - for a tenner. Dry, mineral kick, very classic. #AldiWineClinic

Ireland and UK wines in ALDI have been diverging since Brexit, alas, but I'm pretty sure that this lovely Aniumus Douro red is a big seller with you at present. Here it's €10. #AldiWineClinic

Hi Jane Our pinks are relatively few at this time of the year but this French one hits the spot for me. Good fruit but bone dry and just €10 #AldiWineClinic

I'm sometimes asked what's the best value wine in ALDI. Not an easy question! But I do think this Beaujolais cru is right up there, so fragrant and so right for the appellation. It's €12.99. Try finding a Fleurie anywhere else for that! (I'm obliged to add: #ad)

Planted a row of Home Guard early spuds in the tunnel this morning. Good layer of FYM. Reasonably well sprouted to although they only arrived yesterday. A martyr to blight so good for growing under cover.

Garlic needs a good frosting before it will grow properly. And that's what it got this morning. Planted just before Christmas...
