The Bavarian coalition committed to two new chairs in 2023, but they have not yet been established. At least to my knowledge, new positions have only been added at private universities - with @simonkoschut.bsky.social at Zeppelin and several positions at the @hertiesecurity.bsky.social.

President Gauck gave a great speech at the MSC in 2014, in which he also addressed the lack of professors dealing with foreign/security policy. A decade later, I know of 1 new professorship at German public universities (Tobias Wille, W1, Frankfurt) with "security" in the position's denomination.

The resurgence of conventional warfare in Europe, exemplified by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, has complicated the distinction between war and peace, intensifying multi-scalar and multidimensional security threats that resist traditional categorization. This workshop, "Reconfiguring Collective Defense on NATO's Northern and Eastern Flanks: Towards a Resilient Force Posture," invites a critical examination of the evolving dynamics of collective defense across NATO's Nordic and Eastern allies.
Traditionally, deterrence has hinged on the credible threat of military force, with nuclear deterrence as a key element of preventing aggression. Yet contemporary security concerns extend beyond conventional military considerations, intersecting with complex issues of sovereignty, territoriality, technological advancement, and the politics of knowledge. Workshop participants will re-evaluate the concept of deterrence, considering both conventional and nuclear dimensions, and explore innovative approaches to address the multidimensional threats currently facing the region.
