I personally prefer fixed, but I also had to take atonal ear training, and imagining taking that with moveable do is nightmarish. Tho the end of that class was moving from atonality to sight singing Bach chorales in 4 parts, and that shit was easy after signing fucking berg. That’s another story tho

Which you prefer and use, though, mainly has to do with what youre using it for. For basic ear training, moveable is probably better. But for learning any piece of rep or doing anything outside of tonality, fixed is better

The pro is that if you learn fixed do, not only can you learn intervals without the context of key, the transfer to music with lyrics is in my opinion, a little easier. Plus, there’s no added complication when singing complex music—the solfège never changes regardless of style.

Meanwhile, Detractors of fixed do say it’s no different than just singing note names—and they’re right! In fact, they are note names in romance countries. For this reason, learning with fixed do is pretty difficult—youre bowling without guardrails from day one. That’s hard!

Plus, moveable do uses guard rails of having a key as context. Without the context of a key, hearing the leap of a M6 down or something can be pretty difficult.

Where it falls apart is in complicated music. If a piece has a lot of key changes, constantly changing where Do is can get pretty complicated pretty quickly. This is to say nothing of music that’s bi-tonal or atonal.

Moveable Do is a great pedagogical tool to teach people the basics of dining in a key or two. It teaches them interval relations within a key and can help them learn how to sing modulations when moving to another key. For this reason, it’s also good at teaching to sing in tune in key!
