The seabed rarely consists solely of bare sand: often other materials, such as shells are present. Kooistra et al., show shells have marked effects on bed roughness and sand transport 🐚 🌊

How much can clams influence sand transport even after they die, by their shelly remains? We figured this out in a flume experiment: check out our new paper in @jgroceans.bsky.social 🐚

She tells [us about] seashells [and how they affect sediment transport] on the seashore! 🐚🌊⛏️

Congratulations to @tjkooistra.bsky.social on her latest PhD paper in @jgroceans.bsky.social !

How Shells of Different Shapes Affect Current‐Driven Sand Transport
Sandy seabeds with shells require higher depth-averaged flows for initiation of motion of the sand than a bare sandy seabed Both round and elongated shells decrease bedload transport of sand up t...

🌡️ Europe’s heatwaves are hitting the #Mediterranean sea too – and marine life is reaching breaking point.

Most marine protected areas ignore shifting habitats from #ClimateChange.

We need future-proof protection: science-based, connected, climate-smart.

My first PhD chapter got published! 🎉

We investigated sediment preference of Wadden Sea benthos, and identified areas which are sensitive to sediment change, or "sandification". Curious to know more? You can read our (open access) paper here: doi.org/10.1016/j.ec....

We had lots of fun recording for our project TRAILS at Wageningen University (and on a “real” mudflat!), with my lovely project colleagues Anna-Maartje de Boer, Natascia Pannozzo and @coastallycurious.bsky.social

Last week, I showed our research on sediment mixing by benthic animals at the Dutch Earth Sciences conference (NWO-NAC). I had interesting chats with geologists, learned a lot (amongst others about dinosaurs and plate tectonics😂) and won the second price with my poster!
