Cotter Jr. wasn't your typical Massachusetts millionaire. A bachelor since the 1940s, he lived alone in a 275-year-old estate on Surplus Street. He was worth more than $5 million, but drove a 20-year-old car and didn't own a computer or even a TV set. Though he lived for 40 years on the same street in this seaside town of Colonial homes, neighbors barely knew him. They simply considered Cotter the eccentric next door who liked to ride his horses and be left alone. In death, however, the secrets held by the horseman with old-school ties to Exeter and Harvard have slowly emerged, transforming him into something more complex. Almost two years after Cotter was laid to rest, neighbors learned that the civil law attorney with impeccable establishment credentials was a longtime white su-premacist. Just inside the doors of the stately home that few strangers entered, Cotter displayed wooden eagles from anti-Semitic groups hailing him as their man of the year. His shelves and table tops were stacked with books and pamphlets touting the virtues of white pride and far-right patriotism. His will produced varied bene-ficiaries. He left $25,000 to his favorite waitress at a Quincy diner, and more than $500,000 to help preserve the legacy of the children's book "Peter Rabbit." He left $400,000 to care for his prized American saddle show horses. But then there was the $750,000 doled out in five- and six-figure sums to Holocaust revi-sionists, white supremacist au-thors, and a church that supports extermination of Jews.
