I think this is still true of AI, to an extent - just like using search engines is a skill (or was, now that google sucks) that supplanted library research for many people. I do agree that it's more true for a calculator or the Dewey Decimal System than it is of AI or Google.

...but my take is that's a more philosophical discussion and not one that specifically makes sense as an anti-AI argument.

I'm being hella pedantic and nuanced. I don't think it's a bad discussion, or untrue! But I'm trying to gently chat w/ my friends more than yell at internet grifters.

I think my thought is less "AI can't make us dependent on it" and more "we are dependent on tons of tools that we used to need our brains (or harder tools) for." Nobody knows how slide rules work anymore because we have calculators. There is for sure a discussion to be had about how much is right...

Google maps does make us worse at navigation! It's called embodied cognition - turning things we know into things we have. There are layers to it; looking at a static map and using google maps have somewhat opposite effects. A regular map helps our brain make our own map, GM makes us not use it.

Resource use, plagiarism, IP ownership, economic inequality, etc.

This is HELLA nitpicky on my part, but I've always held onto the "all my teachers told me I'd never have a calculator" thought. I still know my times tables though (mostly, probably lol).

I agree becoming dependent on it would be a crappy outcome, but I don't see how that's different from any other marketing campaign, or about any other product. Cars, computers, phones, etc. AI is obviously the newest link in the tech grifter pipeline, but the argument seems so weak compared to...

I'm not a Gen AI fan by any means - I've never used it. But let's at least be intellectually honest when arguing, yeah?
