Had never heard of that — the flattr button does seem very similar but the automatic system based on browsing history seems insane.

Highlights the importance of having buy-in from publishers. I was imaging it being run as a non profit perhaps in association with a journalist association/union.

I’m a software dev but don’t have the connections/funding to make it viable for mass adoption

If user really liked an article they could press the button multiple times to give it a bigger share but generally the idea is to make it frictionless — they already decided how much they want to spend monthly, so they would not think too hard before pressing it on stuff they liked.

I thought it’d be neat to create a universal tip jar for news. Make a simple button to click like a ❤️ as a widget that news sites put on each article. Users would set how much they want to spend each month on journalism — each month, divvy that amount to all the authors that the user ❤️ed.

Might be able to approximate this with a custom feed. There’s no “seen post” trigger but you could track the posts that the feed has served you and not serve them again. Infinite scrolling is facilitated by pagination and you could make ppp smaller to reduce chance of missing posts
