The 2025 Pacific Community (SPC) Fisheries Meeting was in Hobart, Tasmania this month. Coming through strongly was the desire by Pacific Islands for SPC to find and put more resources into the science needed for effective management of small-scale coastal fisheries. www.spc.int/digitallibra...

Note: not all fish species are fished. Just over 1000 fish species are taken by artisanal fisheries in the Pacific Islands region, and only about 100 of these species are marketed. There are around 33,000 species of fish. Here's a handy estimate of relative biomass (for source see base of diagram)

Protect 50% of the high seas and your protect 30% of the entire ocean, without losing significant production potential*
Which suggests to me that 30x30 will be useless unless backed up by 100% effective management.

I didn't see it, but I'm posting anyway. I used to find reading this a good way to unwind after a difficult day at work.

I showed this to a 4-year old. Sharks holding ice creams always win. Can't imagine why.

Bedraggled memento of my first year as a fisheries officer, rescued from a wardrobe clearout yesterday after a water pipe burst. We had a giant clam science workshop on Naigani Island. I didn't dare wear this in Suva.

This glimpse of the sea from the bottom of our garden always cheers me up - reminds me of childhood, when a view like this was an exceptionally rare and exciting event.
