Book: Here Beside the Rising Tide: Jerry Garcia, the Grateful Dead, and an American Awakening by Jim Newton. An interesting attempt to place Garcia and the Dead as a whole within the counterculture. They steadfastly defied being pigeonholed and ignored politics creating an interesting dichotomy.

Books: Finished Jews vs. Rome, a well researched and written account, focusing on the First Jewish War, 66-70 CE and the Bar Kokhba Rebellion, 132-136 CE. Mixing archaeology, written accounts, numismatics and more to create to create a balanced inquiry into a fraught historical period.
