He permanently loaned the menorah to Yad Vashem, the state of Israel's official Holocaust memorial.

Yad Vashem returns the menorah to the family each Hanukkah, who light the candles for eight nights before returning the piece of history back to the Holocaust memorial.

When they departed, they urged the entire community to flee Germany. Nearly all of them did: Only eight of the five hundred Jews of Kiel perished in the Holocaust.

Yehudah Mansbuch, grandson of the Posners, retained both the menorah and photo.

Rachel snapped a photo of the menorah just before he lit the candles.

On the back of the photo, Rachel later wrote: " 'Death to Judah', so the flag says. 'Judah will live forever', so the light answers."

The Posners fled Germany in 1934, and moved to Israel.

Directly across the street from the Posner's home was the local Nazi headquarters.

Rabbi Posner was running late, and needed to light the menorah before dusk fell. (Dusk signalled the start of Sabbath, and under Jewish law no work can be done on Sabbath).

The NEA was well aware who was responsible for the bombings, since Herbert Hockin, a member of the IW's executive board, was their paid spy.

These hundreds of bombings were later described as perhaps the largest domestic terrorism campaign in U.S. history.

Beginning in late 1906, national and local officials of the IW launched a dynamiting campaign to fight back.

Between 1906 and 1911, the union blew up 110 iron works, though only a few thousand dollars in damages was done. The union took care to ensure no one died.

By 1910, U.S. Steel had succeeded in driving almost all unions out of its plants.

Unions in other iron manufacturing companies also vanished. Only the IW held on (though the strike at American Bridge continued).

Local, state, and federal law enforcement cooperated in the campaign of violence.

In 1906, the IW struck American Bridge in an attempt to retain their contract. However, the anti-union intimidation campaign was a significant success.

U.S. Steel formed the National Erectors' Association (NEA), a coalition of steel and iron industry employers. The primary goal of the NEA was to bust unions. Employers used spies, agents provocateur, private detective agencies, and strike breakers to engage in a campaign against the unions.

In 1902, the IW won a strike against the American Bridge Company, a subsidiary of U.S. Steel. American Bridge was the dominant company in the iron industry, and within a year the IW had organized almost every U.S. iron manufacturer.
