Earthquake Geologist in public service. Mostly posts about earthquake geology and a cat..mostly. Aspiring photographer, listening for the secret, searching for the sound
I totally felt this little M3.2 earthquake. So slight that I thought it was more like an animal jumping up on the couch, but the cat was already on the couch. If you felt it, you can report it here:

It’s been a gloomy day in San Francisco, so here are some pictures of some icebergs in Greenland on a similar gloomy day back in September. I prefer having icebergs around.

Good morning Calaveras fault! Just felt a little M4.3 earthquake that is located near Gilroy. Just slight shaking in San Francisco that interrupted me as I was sipping coffee. If you felt it, you can report it here: earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/...

Greenland Part 3: One of my hopes for our trip to Greenland was to see polar bears in the wild. We only saw a mother and two cubs from a great distance on the first day. It was still amazing. Here is my best grainy photo.

More Greenland photos, featuring some geology. Scoresbysund has some fantastic exposures of columnar basalts, which are ~55 million years old (young for Greenland rocks!) related to flood basalts when the Atlantic was opening up. Fantastical shapes and fall tundra colors

I’ll be sharing more photos from our September trip to Greenland in the coming weeks now that I’m catching up on photos. Get ready for more icebergs, landscapes, fluffy arctic animals, and geology from the trip.

Time for more Greenland photos! I had no view of the amazing aurora borealis show this week, but got to see a decent display in September in Greenland. Ribbons of pulsating light at times. Amazing to experience.

Just saw this rather large bobcat walk up to this flock of wild turkeys in the backyard. A lot of commotion, but I think the bobcat was reluctant to take on 15 turkeys at once.

The San Ramon earthquake cluster seems to be dying off, but this behavior could pick up again. There isn’t a way to say for sure what is next, which is why we focus on preparedness, rather than prediction. Hopefully this pattern continues and activity continues to diminish with time.

I did not feel this or the M3.7 a bit later, but I was in the east bay working outside. A reminder that despite the federal government shutdown, a group of dedicated scientists at the USGS works to maintain networks that monitor earthquakes and other hazards. earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/...
