Running on the wheel rims, then, leaving a trail of shredded rubber behind them.

Fair comment. A bit more like a hobby horse than a wheeled vehicle, this coalition.

They've wheeled out John Key and now Blinglish to talk up Luxon. Who next? The ghosts of PMs past? Past sports stars like Richie McCaw and Dan Carter?

The mean part of me derives ongoing satisfaction at thinking how often Key must cringe at his decision to ordain Luxon as his successor.

But, from what ACT and Shane Jones are crowing about, the planned abolition of reg council is basically to circumvent any environmental controls and management. The god of economic growth and bugger the consequences.
November 25, 2025 at 7:40 PM
Now, while a fair number of councillors are still long-serving men supplementing their superannuation with honoraria - including unremarkable former MP Jonathan Young, a new broom on the staff side has seen a rejuvenated council doing good work on the environment against the odds.

whose glory days were back in the early 80s. And the CEO, Basil, a man fondly recalled by his peers as 'a benevolent dictator', or, as better described by my husband as a malevolent dictator. And most councillors were long serving, conservative farmers. But times change.

I distrust pretty much every change this government comes up with. I just feel cynical and suspicious.
November 25, 2025 at 5:17 AM
I am sure you are right in that this change is part of gutting environmental protections as much as they can. But I don't expect those who put so much effort into regulator capture (mostly farming lobby) to look closely.

Another of those cases where it is land damage that renders the house uninhabitable. Beyond stressful for the house owners. And the locations of many of these wells are unknown.
November 24, 2025 at 8:17 PM
One collapsed some years ago on a town section. That was when we found out about orphan wells and that the responsibility sits with the landowner. I think even the insurance company bailed on that one along with EQC.

Reg Chibnall, who came before Scarrow, was a good ‘un
November 24, 2025 at 12:23 AM
Homophobic, conceited, spiteful and unaware of his limitations and shortcomings.

Mind you, we once thought Maggie was a good ‘un and we were wrong on that score, too.
November 24, 2025 at 12:22 AM
Just a shame Scarrow was not one of the good guys. Toxic, actually.

Daughter saved 1k flying Jetstar Sydney to Hamilton with her 2 year old last month. I had to go and pick her up but that was fine.

That is very poignant, Russell. Thank you.
