It’s Human Rights Day 2025!

This year’s theme is “Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials,” so we’ve put together a day-in-the-life to show how human rights allow us to go about our daily routines without fear or restriction.

Morning: Waking up and getting ready for the day. Key right: Article 25 - The Right to an Adequate Standard of Living. Explanation: Having a safe place to sleep, access to nutritious food and safe water for drinking and washing is all a part of our right to an adequate standard of living. Mid-morning: Attend school and work. Key right: Article 26 - The Right to Education Article 23 - The Right to Work. Explanation: Having free primary education and access to higher education based on merit comes from the right to education. We have favourable working conditions with fair renumeration and access to unions through the right to work. Afternoon: Travel to visit family members. Key right: Article 13 - Right to Freedom of Movement Article 16 - Right to a Family Life. Explanation: We can travel around our country and leave it because of the right to freedom of movement. The right to a family life means that the State should protect the family unit, i.e., by not separating families who are fleeing domestic violence together. Evening: Scroll online and post on social media. Key right: Article 19 - Right to freedom of expression. Explanation: Being able to receive information to form our opinions, and express our ideas through any media is part of the right to freedom of expression.

Quote from blog: "It’s important with this type of work to make sure that any opportunities for people with particular insight into an issue to contribute their views are meaningful for everyone involved. Equality, diversity & inclusion (EDI) policies are an essential tool for applying a human rights and equalities first approach within an organisation. Swipe for tips on creating an EDI policy which feels practical and relevant to everyone within your organisation. An EDI policy should be based on: Your organisation's individual values and principles. e.g. you may find that respect is core to your operations, and this is something you wish to thread through your EDI policy. Your organisational culture and leadership style are also important to consider e.g. maybe your organisation is more decentralised in decision making, and so helping your stakeholders empower themselves and having a culture of trust is important to base your policy on. Work environment is good to think about. Do you physically work in an office? Do your services include home visits? These different settings require thought into how you can make sure EDI is incorporated at all levels, and that this policy works for all stakeholders in all environments. EDI policies should: Have clear and actionable commitments; Outline clear feedback and reporting mechanisms; Be informed by the views of stakeholders; Have a clear plan to communicate the policy to stakeholders. EDI policies shouldn't: Have vague commitments without actionable steps; Rely on staff checking the policy on their own accord; Rely on senior staff only when developing the policy; Be a document that could be applicable to any organisation.

Climate change and inequality. Did you know that climate change is a human rights and equalities issue? Climate change disproportionately impacts those who are already marginalised within society. Also, climate change is a ‘threat multiplier’, meaning it exacerbates existing social, political and economic tensions and therefore intensifies inequality. The values that underpin human rights - fairness, respect, equality, dignity and autonomy - can also be used to develop an organisational response to climate change i.e., an environmental policy. The Scottish Government has launched a consultation on their Equality and Human Rights Mainstreaming Strategy.

We’ve put together some information to help you to respond.

Don’t wait! The consultation closes on Wednesday 5th February 🕐
Consultation: Equality and Human Rights Mainstreaming Strategy. The Scottish Government’s Equality and Human Rights Strategy aims to embed equality and human rights across the public sector – it will be accompanied by an action plan and toolkit for public sector organisations to use. A consultation is currently open to find out your views on the strategy. We’ve put together some information on what this means. Swipe for more information. The Mainstreaming Strategy is centred around activity in Scottish Government and the wider public sector which will impact on service delivery and decision-making processes. The Mainstreaming Strategy is focused around six key drivers: Strengthening leadership; developing accountability & transparency; ensuring effective regulatory & policy environment; utilising evidence and experience; enhancing capability and culture; improving capacity. The third sector has a wide range of experience to contribute to this consultation process. If you have experience of engaging with services, engaging with public bodies or even in mainstreaming human rights and equalities in your own organisation it’s likely that you will have useful expertise or knowledge to contribute to the consultation.
