like I am so beyond uninterested in reading a fantasy novel with the perspective that it could be a false retelling of events but there is no literary 'tell' nor any payoff to interpreting it as such because the only record we have of the events in question is tHE FANTASY NOVEL

Here's a statement from DHS itself, taking umbrage at NYC Comptroller Brad Lander's criticism of ICE (notably, Lander didn't actually call them secret police lol - telling on themselves!)
But it's a great ex of how sensitive the gov't is to this criticism. It's a hit dog hollering.

The unspoken rules for protest in the US have been, for decades, that if you have a big tame sign-holding march, it's safe to bring your kids.
If you're not perceived as threatening their power, they'll leave you alone.
