Despite the circumstances, it’s been heartening to see the support for Unidata today.

WHEN Unidata gets its $, this will be critical to help chart a course and ensure the program does the most to continue to serve the community with what it has. If you’d like to help, taking the survey really will.
✨The 2025 NSF Unidata Community Survey is now live! ✨
Share your insights, support community progress.

Take 15 minutes to complete the survey, and as a thank you, you'll have the chance to enter a drawing for an NSF Unidata swag bag.

I talked to Nature about the latest development at NSF, which is a five-alarm fire for American science. The scale of immediate impact is massive. We narrowly escaped this affecting @viralemergence.org for now, but will have to shut down in a few months if this stays.

Please enjoy my last ever post at Climate.gov/ENSO Blog. This afternoon I was fired by the Trump Administration 15 days before my 2yr probationary period ended on March 13.
I have worked at NOAA since 2010, and I'm so incredibly proud of the work I did. If anyone wants a quote, let me know.
Predicting El Niño and La Niña is tough, but new research analyzing 20+ years of forecasts finds dynamical models outperform statistical ones, especially for El Niño. La Niña onset? That's been much harder. Read more in our new ENSO blog post! www.climate.gov/news-feature...

If your waiting for the Google Colab version of Segment Every Grain, would love some more comments / testers. Seems to work fine with a T4 instance. Can't thank @zzsylvester.bsky.social enough!

Poster today at #AMS2025 on ML education in the undergraduate classroom (#640). Also had a nice chat with the @earthmoverhq.bsky.social folks, and worth stopping by! Really neat cloud performant platform.

Same struggles exist for geo’s as well! Wish there were a bit more flexibility.
If you’re at #AMS2025 consider this town hall!

The requirements for a federal government “meteorologist” (the 1340 series) are from the 1990s. Many undergraduate programs use these guidelines in curriculum planning. Modernizing the requirements would close the gap with a modernize curriculum.
Next - a town hall at #AMS2025 focused on discussing considerations for potential proposed changes to the Meteorology 1340 series!

Working/thinking about machine learning (ML) education for earth science (broadly, hydro, rocks, atmo, met, climate).

What are the biggest roadblocks? What do students get mixed up on?

It’s never been easier to start, but that activation energy is still tough.
