Side note: There are crowdfunders in place for better town Christmas decs and to help put on some of the events that use free parking. The car parks make on average £600 a day so potentially £000s on busy days. Parking revenue could benefit the community so much more if they can afford to lose it.

I've 99%* ditched FB for that very reason (rage bait). Even when you're aware of it you still get sucked in.

*Annoyingly some groups and Marketplace can still be handy. I've blocked it from my phone and always log out on my old laptop to put a few obstacles in place to stop casual use.

Our council does it for events that will be packed anyway, including our hundreds-years-old medieval fair, which attracted thousands every year before cars existed. If they really wanted to boost footfall, they'd arrange buses as many of these events are on Sundays when there's no public transport.

Never mind that, most would fail on demonstrating Christian behaviours and values.

Yep. Luckily we don't have any here but was shocked when I did encounter them in the wild. They look terrible.

The Nazi's flags weren't torn, tatty, and limp and put up with cable ties TBF.

This would be an upgrade for us - there's no refreshments on board on our 2 hour 20 min train to Waterloo.

Sounds win-win to me.

Our little town is just 1 mile by 1.5 miles and almost everyone lives within a mile of the high street. Yet 350+ non-disabled people drive less than 1.2 miles to work.

TBF, the footways are narrow in the centre and cycling is hairy due to narrow roads and hundreds of parked cars.

The number of non-disabled people (365) who drive less than 1.2 miles to work in our little town is equivalent to around 1/3 of the capacity of the car parks. And insufficient car parking is always cited as a threat to our high street.

The census data is eye opening when you drill down by town/area.

In Yeovil (pop. 50K) - which is often heavily congested - more than 2.5K non-disabled people drive less than 1.2 miles to work. That's a lot of road and parking space needed!

This is the sort of rubbish that contributed to me deleting most of my social media accounts.

Is it possible to demand that the council do an equality impact assessment? We've been trying for get barriers removed for years on alleyways but have only had an acknowledgement from the council when we provided evidence that the footways weren't wide enough. (These aren't cycle routes though.)

They probably consider Play-Doh "woke" with ingredients like that.
December 7, 2025 at 8:36 AM
He sounds like a craft beer ad.
December 6, 2025 at 9:37 AM
Our council does this, even for events that are guaranteed to be packed out anyway. It's especially galling when they do it on Sundays when there are no buses.
December 4, 2025 at 9:46 PM
People try this when I'm in the same position as the cyclist in a two-tone car and it's incredibly frustrating.

Our local tap rooms hasn't put up its Christmas events on its website yet. Luckily, I found out about a event but had to log into Facebook to see the details.

Rates for most types of crime are down. I wonder if this is because younger people are more likely to be victims of crime (according to 2023 data anyway) or their perception of crime from the media they consume?
