I have the first gen, it works fine for me and the upgrade isn't quite worth it... at least until they make a better color.

I use one of THESE bad boys and I love it. The dpad starts off a little stiff, but after ya use it a ton, it's a great way to play snes games imo (I play Super Mario World obsessively so it's a big deal to me)

They are JUST fine imo, at least they have a rubber texture that's not slick. Using it for an actual long 2D game sesh feels sad tho

PS controllers have like.... an OKAY dpad????? It's not my favorite, but it beats the hell out of xbox dpads.

Using anything for too long and hard can blister your thumb, no matter the texture. Having a better rubber grip just makes a lot more sense to me

I've used it before, and yeah it's pretty tight. 8bitdo seems like the only company who wants to make a good dpad now.

I am genuinely curious as to if someone out there PREFERS the xbox style shiny dpad.
November 21, 2025 at 5:51 PM
Even Nintendo, the company who basically created the dpad, makes crappy dpads too. They can't help themselves from making teeny tiny DS dpads that just don't feel good to use at all.

I really like my Steam Deck, but I genuinely do not like the dpad on it. It's too slick and slippery. Seeing the Steam Controller take the exact thing is like, understandable, but I just don't get it.

I agree!

It kinda baffles me that the SNES sort of perfected the D-pad in terms of size and texture, but thanks to Xbox controllers normalizing a slick and shiny dpad, that's just what we're stuck with now.

I really like the new Steam controller, but it has that shiny ass Deck d-pad I'm like "ugh" about.
