i think often about this discussion between Yoshiyuki Tomino and Hideaki Anno. it's one of the funniest ways anyone has ever talked about restraint vs self indulgence in art.
Anno: Oh, I’m critical of Porco Rosso, myself. Tomino: What was wrong with Porco? Anno: As a picture, nothing. But because I know Miyazaki-san personally, I can’t view it objectively. His presence in the film is too conspicuous, it’s no good. In other words... it feels like he’s showing off. Tomino: How so? Anno: He has the main character act all self-deprecating, calling himself a pig... but then puts him in a bright red plane, has him smoking all cool-like, even creates a love triangle between a cute young thing and a sexy older lady. Tomino: Ha! I see what you mean. He and | are around the same age, though. So I get how he feels, unconditionally. So I may think, “Oh boy...” but I can’t stay mad at him (laughs). Anno gets a little too into talking about underpants, and Tomino of all people has to check hit Anno: From my point of view, he’s being very presumptuous. Tomino-san, you put so much of yourself into your works, it is like you’re dancing naked in them. I like that! (balls fists) In Miya- san’s recent works, he makes you fhink he’s dancing naked... but on second glance, you realize he’s still wearing underpants. (getting carried away) I hate that! I feel like shouting: “Take it all off!” (getting really carried away) And to add insult to injury... he’s wearing fancy underpants! Tomino: You don’t beat around the bush. We get it, we get it already. Anno: (shrinking) Excuse me. Tomino: i do get what you mean, and i don’t mean to play devil’s advocate for Miyazaki, but... generally speaking, that’s just how you get when you age. It’s the same for me, surely. That was my first time hearing it put so frankly... but you get what I mean already. It does feel nice letting it all hang out, waving your dick around. That’s how movies ought to be! Anno: Yes, I agree. I don’t like it when people try to obscure themselves like that. If you’re gonna wave your dick around, wave it all around! If you don’t have the guts to do that, then wear the best clothing you can. Tomino: Right... Dress yourself to the nines! Anno: Commit yourself to putting on a show. He couldn’t do that. I felt betrayed. Like, this guy isn't really naked!

Had a really bad itch to draw. Tried to mimic one of the MSPA styles. Two pieces of my character, Tereus Taipen. One piece of Kasnia Nimzix and one piece of Smokes Degrot.

Returning home as he loses his left arm. He stands in a darkend hallway the only illumination coming from the light outside. Blood from his left arm drips onto the floor and across his coat, trousers and left shoe. His overall colour scheme is much darker to reflect what has happened, the only light colours you see are his bladed weapon, his horns, eyes and teeth. His shadow is casted in front of him from the light behind. A friends Homestuck Troll OC. They have a shaved head on the right side, purple hair on the left and the back of their hair is flowing. They have Large Antler like horns. They are playing with their hair and winking to the camera with a smile, as if they are taking a selfie. A friends Homestuck Troll OC. They are standing looking at their phone with a cigarette in their mouth and their toungue out in disgust. They have recieved a message from Tereus Taipen and really do not want to deal with it today.

A new translation was recently published of a seminal manga/comics studies essay in 1995 that documents and explains manga iconography with 120 examples. It's so exciting to see a precursor of what I'm doing rn with the Comics Devices Library

Abstract: In the following translation of an important essay from seminal Manga Studies work How to Read Manga (Manga no yomikata, 1995), manga creator and editor Takekuma Kentarō examines the full range of manga iconography (manpu) and visual effects in this sweeping survey of over 120 concrete samples. He calls these “shape metaphors” (keiyu) and classifies them into two main branches: stand-alone icons and picture-dependent metaphorical effects. If a giant sweat mark has been drawn on the back of a character’s head, one can tell that he is in a panic just from seeing that back figure even though this image is unrealistic. This is a type of visual metaphor and the profundity of such expressions are distinct to comic books. Takekuma’s “shape metaphors” have such refined functions that express the situation or the state of mind of a character, often efficiently and even humorously. Through their use, comic book artists have been able to liberate their stories from the bare bones of plot and create additional layers of psychology and mood all through these seemingly nonsensical and excessive graphic marks. For the first time, this translation presents in English the writings of this seminal manga artist, humorist, critic, and scholar and provides an encyclopedic-like guide to some of manga’s most interesting and irrepressible visual tropes. A set of expressive lines used in manga to denote motion and feeling.
