And I hold Lewis to the same standard by the way. He is incredibly 'proven', with a very strong teammate resume, but he has had the car..like you have to. I think guys like Leclerc and Russell are outstanding, they just don't have the car. They could beat prime Lewis or Max on any given day.

Sure, but I think it just puts 'great' into a more realistic context. The Merc and Red Bull were very evenly matched that year..Newey says he thinks Red Bull just edged it over the year. Hamilton had Bottas taking some points off him..and but for Masi, the old guy won, aced it.
December 7, 2025 at 9:29 PM
Of course it is..if you have far and away the best car, clear No1 status and a weak teammate..you literally just have to drive it home. Look at it another way, as good as he is..he went life and death with a 37 year old Hamilton and needed Masi in the end! That's a balancer!
December 7, 2025 at 9:03 PM
You're talking about all-time greats vs each other in Prost and Senna though..Prost's resume is incredible, so Senna's performances vs Prost are worth a hell of a lot. I agree Schumacher's teammate resume isn't really impressive at all, he was an "I'm No1" guy. Not in my top 3 for that reason.
December 7, 2025 at 9:01 PM
When I see him race with another top driver, on equal terms..then I'll believe what I see. Until then, we can only guess. All I know for sure is, no No2 has a hope at Red Bull, so I have no useful marker.
December 7, 2025 at 8:54 PM
I don't really understand the term 'generational'..I hear it a lot in sports, it seems overused. He's a top driver, I keep saying that..but is he better than the likes of Russell and Leclerc? I've honestly no idea because he's a one team guy with no teammate resume..like Vettel was pre Ferrari.
December 7, 2025 at 8:53 PM
I wouldn't expect a lot different tbh, and there's every chance the engine will be a dog! They've had other good guys..Checo is no mug..Albon has shown plenty of talent. Young guys though generally, who will comply and be quiet. Team Max knows that no top driver will do that.
December 7, 2025 at 8:51 PM
I hope we'll get a better measure when he leaves there, but it concerns me that the Mercedes talk seemed to suggest he'd replace Russell..which would just be more of the same. He could get 10 WDCs but if he has no teammate resume, no way we could objectively put him with Senna, Hamilton, Prost etc.
December 7, 2025 at 8:47 PM
All I think when I see that kid fawning over Max is how utterly shitty Daniil Kvyat must feel! Women can be COLD!!
December 7, 2025 at 7:46 PM
On occasions, not consistently all the time..and never situations where one car is winning championships and the other is struggling to get out of Q3. No driver alone makes that level of difference without there being other things at play.
December 7, 2025 at 7:21 PM
Put him on equal terms with Leclerc, Russell..maybe even Alonso and Hamilton at a push..he might still win, no question, but I'm telling you there is no way in the world it would be the cake walk the numbers you believe in suggest it would be. NOBODY is that far ahead, with all the data..it's crazy
December 7, 2025 at 7:19 PM
I know..I know all the detail! It's more just the point that, young or not, he was beatable regularly before it became team Max. I say again, he's a top top, driver..just not quite the superhuman that some are willing to buy into. Why are we so far in and he has such a weak teammate resume 🤔
December 7, 2025 at 7:18 PM
Like Alonso, he's still good enough to compete and be credible, but not to win championships..not unless he got some Max conditions. Qualifying is incredibly important and the likes of Leclerc and Russell are just plain quicker than a 40+ Lewis.
December 7, 2025 at 7:05 PM
Like, it's that or..Ricciardo, Albon, Perez..just reel them all off..they are essentially identical drivers and Max is 6 tenths faster than all of them. Lest we forget, Ricciardo did beat him before it became 'team Max'. To believe driver talent creates gaps that large is fairytale stuff.
December 7, 2025 at 7:01 PM
Proof? If you have a meaningful long term understanding of F1, it is beyond obvious. We also heard many times from Checo that he didn't have the same parts on the car. Logically, the gap to so many entirely different teammates is not logically explainable other than the car isn't driveable for them
December 7, 2025 at 6:59 PM
The end is near..my call that he should have walked into the sunset after Istanbul 2020 holds. He's not 'washed', but he's not that guy anymore..nobody can fight age. He's wasting his time now really.
December 7, 2025 at 6:56 PM
I think he's a top, top driver. But equally, I think it's blatantly obvious to anyone who isn't completely deluded that he has a unique set of conditions at Red Bull, conditions that provide him a huge advantage over his rivals. If Norris or Piastri had no intra-team rival, they'd have won by a mile
December 7, 2025 at 6:55 PM
No discrediting him at all, just pointing out a blatantly obvious fact. Even as a fan, you have to be willing to acknowledge valid, objective, points or it becomes silly.
December 7, 2025 at 6:53 PM
Not really..his main rival has 2 equal drivers! Huge difference
December 7, 2025 at 6:46 PM
Indeed..so long as Red Bull has a 'superstar', people will talk about Red Bull 😉 It seems kinda funny now to think, Vettel was that guy..4 back-to-back WDCs..of course, he was never THAT good. I expect Max will be away in '27 if they struggle as predicted next year.
December 7, 2025 at 6:38 PM
It requires a broader contextual understanding of the difference between Red Bull as a brand and the vast majority of F1 teams, if not all the others. Horner is on record years ago explaining this. Red Bull is in sports to create emotive, inspiring connections to their brand..that is driver, not car
December 7, 2025 at 6:30 PM
Likely the team will bomb and Max will be away in '27 so maybe not as meaningful as it might usually be..he'll be fine, top guy
December 7, 2025 at 6:26 PM
Nahhhhh...no chance
December 7, 2025 at 6:11 PM
He might be but it would be good to see him given an actual proper teammate who gets equal treatment, as it is at other teams. Lest we forget, Daniel Ricciardo beat him before it became "team Max". No other driver on the grid has the one-driver-focused conditions that Max has.
