Rugby history is traditionally narrow. The Rugby History Project aims to expand the narrative and tell the lesser-known stories.

Whilst I’m 99.9% sure this Morgan jersey is a training jersey rather than a match worn jersey, it’s incredibly cool to have such an important piece of women’s rugby history on my wall.

The union put out a combined Great Britain side between 1986 and 1990, when intervention from the IRB required the nations to put out 4 separate teams. Ireland, Scotland and Wales would go on to form separate unions between 1992 and 1994, thus ending the combined side.

Between 1983 and 1994, Women’s Rugby in Great Britain and Ireland was governed by the Women’s Rugby Football Union. The union governed women’s rugby at all levels across the four nations as the men’s unions were not interested in the women’s game.

I’d suggest looking at the work of Tony Collins for a deeper dive into class and rugby! How football began and rugbys great split are both great reads. Rugby Victoriana by Graham Morris is about working class northern rugby during the Victorian era but I haven’t had a chance to read it yet!

France is super interesting and I would say is probably the closest we can get to seeing what would’ve happened to the development of English rugby if the split hadn’t of happened. Class and rugby across the world really could be a whole book!
