The first student in my lab group successfully defended their graduate work today! Many congrats to Iona Rohan (coadvised by @jenniferfrey.bsky.social) for her MS work analyzing the effects of wind energy on the habitat use of terrestrial mammals in central NM. Stay tuned for our findings!

Glad that my state recognizes the benefits of vaccines!

Do you like acoustic data, community ecology, and desert oases? Apply for a PhD in my lab to investigate the role of ephemeral water sources (i.e., playa lakes and tinajas) in structuring desert bat (and maybe bird) communities. Visit lavertylab.org/join-the-lab for more. Applications due October 1

Though classes started this week, we are still far from the end of summer in the Southwest. Here's a glimpse of one of the many gorgeous monsoon sunsets from last month

Enjoying the cool weather in Baltimore this week for #ESA2025. Come hear about the long-distance movements of lesser long-nosed bats that my colleagues and I have been documenting this Thursday at 8:45am (COS 128 - Behavior: Migration and Movement 1). Please don't be afraid to say hi!

Back home after a bat acoustic course two weeks ago in Tucson and bat fieldwork on both sides of the border last week. I love where my work takes me and the people I get to spend time with in the field

*All bat capture and handling is conducted under scientific permits

Out today in @conbiology.bsky.social, @ceciliamontauban.bsky.social led a paper in which we assessed bat representation in African protected areas. Threatened & data deficient species were absent from or rarely documented / predicted (species distribution models) in PAs (3/4) doi.org/10.1111/cobi...

In a paper led by Austin Waag in a Journal of North American Bat Research special issue on survey methods for monitoring bats, we discuss the use of passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags with some pros and cons from 5 ongoing studies (2/4) Full text here: www.eaglehill.us/NABRonline/a...

Wishing we were still offline and at alpine lakes... Glad to have traded fireworks for wildflowers for the holiday last weekend with @johnlfield.bsky.social and our cattle dog mix Bruce along the Santa Barbara Divide in the Pecos Wilderness. Successful first backpacking trip for Bruce!

Bruce's first gotcha day: then and now. So glad to have this pup in my life. He's excited for @johnlfield.bsky.social to come back from TN soon!

Sleeping on the ground is good for the soul and somewhat good for tiring out Bruce, our 1 year old cattle dog mix. Grateful to have the Lincoln NF such a short drive away.

2025 bat work in my lab is off to a great start! MSc students, Taylor Pichler and @hollywhited.bsky.social are leading work in NM and AZ, respectively, this summer with the help of several NMSU FWCE undergrads. Excited to learn about their findings on food webs and foraging movements/diets!

Grateful to have spent a few days with ~150 of my wonderful colleagues in the bat community at the Western Bat Working Group meeting in San Diego this week. I'm also proud of these guys for making the trip so close to finals week and absorbing all they could!

Happy international bat appreciation day! While we hope you love bats each and every day, here's a reminder of how cool these mammals can be. Photos from Namibia , Madagascar, and the US included in this 🧵 (1/4) 🦇

This study also highlights the benefits of collaborative research and maintaining those collaborations across political borders. This work would not have been possible without my coauthors who used similar field methods and all contributed data. We welcome others to join our efforts! 4/7

Our work relied on passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags and antenna/reader systems installed at roost entrances. Therefore, the distances we reported (straight-line distances between roosts) are underestimates of the movement capabilities of this migratory, nectar-feeding bat species 2/7

I spent another spring break with Uncle Larry in Yucca Valley as a writing retreat the year before I finished my PhD. He continued to impress me. I was so glad to have connected more with him and one of my mom's other uncles when I moved out west

Last weekend, I lost my great uncle. Uncle Larry was the executive director of the National Health Law Program for much of my life. He also was a fantastic traveler, storyteller, and host. He hosted my entire rugby team for St. Patrick's Day when we were in LA for spring break. 🧵

This weekend marked another year around the sun for me and Bruce turned 1! I've been crazy busy at work lately, but got out for an afternoon hike in the Organ Mountains to celebrate and enjoy the cooler weekend weather with @johnlfield.bsky.social
