I heard the voice of reason and I didn't listen
his high school coach should have had this conversation with him but it's always hard

I'm playing The Alters months after it's AI placeholder art related deletion from public consciousness and it's alright

I'm always asking myself "Did Smiling Friends parody The Simpsons?" and today I have my answer

comforting to know that everything worked out for the best

Yeah, I read it right after graduating college while I was unemployed for a year and drinking and smoking a lot of pot. One of the great novels imo if you're in exactly that situation. Really heavy book but it feels earnest. One of those novels I want to write an essay about someday

I'm due for a reread. I think a lot of stuff from that book is happening in America today
November 13, 2025 at 8:20 AM
It does and to my knowledge you're the first person I've ever interacted with who caught that lol. I liked the book and thought it was a good name

(tragic) these perverts can never be sure that they're being watched

All I've really gathered from this and similar stories is that the digital sale charts are trivially gamed and there are companies that can get whatever song you want into the Spotify algorithm's regular rotation

That Hoover Stew you liked is coming back in style

I'm not sitting at home listening to avant-garde music so really I'm just a different flavor of the same thing, but yes, I'm not sure where the opposition to the mainstream lies these days
November 10, 2025 at 11:22 PM
There's a difference but I'm not sure there's a significant difference when you dig right down to it is what I'm saying. But then again, maybe the whole opposition to mainstream pop is just something you and I imagined lol
November 10, 2025 at 11:20 PM
For me it seems like whereas alt-pop was once seen as a true alternative, now it kind of occupies the same space as mainstream pop and moreover the alt acts are happy to be accepted by the mainstream. Some folks are Swifties and some folks are Charli XCX girlies and some are Rosalia stans

If there is any beef, it never has anything to do with the music. It's like the equivalent of twitter drama. "This artist said this other artist has bad vibes". Wish somebody would just say "Hey, your music is shit" sometimes lol
November 10, 2025 at 11:04 PM
Yeah, the utopia it promises is that pop music can be totally weird and queer too, dude, but I just don't know if it ever reached escape velocity from pop music's trappings. Everything is fun, everything is danceable, everything is vibes, everything has to go down easy
November 10, 2025 at 11:01 PM
I won't shit on anybody's favorite artist for no reason but let's just say this + the trend towards maximalist production has caused some RYM certified hyperpop and artpop albums from the past few years to leave me feeling nothing after I hear it, just "what were they even trying to do?" lol
November 10, 2025 at 10:54 PM
so what are self styled alt pop or art pop artists defining themselves in opposition to? It's all very nebulous
November 10, 2025 at 10:43 PM
Yeah, that too. Do pop songs chart because they're great songs or do they chart because the person making the song is undeniably popular for a myriad of reasons? I could have predicted that every song on Taylor Swift's new album would chart before I heard a note of it
November 10, 2025 at 10:42 PM
Like I think ironically a lot of the underground acts are just better pop songwriters than the pop adjacent acts
November 10, 2025 at 10:29 PM
The problem I've had with most major "left of center" pop acts is either that the experimental aspects end up becoming subservient to the pop aspects or it just sounds like nothing; a bunch of sound effects and instrumentation that signal "experimental" but the song itself is just mush

the first blocklist she's on just being called "Shitheads" made me actually laugh out loud

Have formative memories of being driven to school by my slightly more religious friend's mom and she played Amy Grant CDs every morning. Apparently it was enough of a thing that they had Amy Grant parody songs in 1987. Just a whole moment
