Last year, lawmakers eliminated New Hampshire’s Interest & Dividends tax—resulting in a $180 million hole in the 2025 budget and beyond — handing a huge tax break to people with substantial investment income. Now, they’re trying to fill the funding gap they created by extracting revenue from Medicaid recipients. This is not about fiscal responsibility; it is about shifting the tax burden from the wealthy onto working-class families, children, people with disabilities, and older adults. These budget choices reveal a stark and immoral set of priorities which do not reflect the values of ordinary Granite Staters. We urge legislators to remember that Medicaid is not an optional perk: it is the difference between life and death for thousands of people in New Hampshire. Erecting more barriers to accessing care will kill people. It really is that simple, and that dire. The Hands Off Medicaid campaign calls on Governor Ayotte to: Veto any state budget that includes cuts to Medicaid, including premiums and work requirements Publicly urge federal lawmakers to remove Medicaid cuts from the federal budget Reinstate the Interest & Dividends tax in New Hampshire so that those most able to pay contribute their fair share Governor Ayotte has a choice: advance the well-being of New Hampshire’s healthcare system and working families—or stand by while our state’s crucial services are dismantled to benefit the wealthy. Medicaid is not the problem. It is one of the most effective tools we have to protect lives, promote stability, and strengthen the economy. When Medicaid is strong, NH thrives. This campaign is not backing down. We will continue to organize, mobilize, and raise our voices until Medicaid is fully protected in this budget and beyond.
