“We can and must do better as a society” has long been my prescription for ‘if we’re ever getting out of this peacefully’.

This is often interpreted as scolding/hopelessness. It’s not. It’s the solution.

“Ask not what you can do for you…” would be a career killer for a Dem pol in 2020s America.

Just a reminder that we would not be in this mess, nor would we have endured any of the mess of the past decade, if the vast majority of our public was decent and responsible.

When 69% of the country either voted red or didn’t vote, the vast majority of our public isn’t decent and responsible.

It’s a corny sentiment, but I travel a lot and seeing clips of #HandsOff in all of these major cities reminds me of just how many places I love in America.

Never forget, even in red states, cities are cities, and you’ll find good people everywhere.

I think it’s lost on a lot of people here that just because tens of millions are rightfully pissed about Signal and tons of other items, the plain fact of the matter is that, meanwhile, hundreds of millions of Americans could not possibly care less about any of it.

The public needs to start caring.

The thing is, Republicans aren’t hoodwinking anyone.

They’re the “take from the poor to enrich the rich” people, it’s been their brand for generations, but the vast majority of America’s freewilled adults have stubbornly refused to devote mere seconds to figuring this out.

That’s the root problem.

So tired already of hearing “This isn’t what America voted for”.

Yes it is, and we need to stop making excuses for people who were so recklessly irresponsible. Trump was loud and clear.

Also, spotting a lying con artist is supposed to be a first grade skill. Voters are free-willed adults.

Probably a pipe dream, but I hope our discourse in 2025 becomes less centered on what Democrats supposedly need to do differently, and a lot more centered on what our society as a whole needs to do differently.

The era of political disengagement needs to end, as do the excuses for disengagement.

The bottom line is it doesn’t matter what Democrats say or how they message it.

When 2/3 of free-willed adults in America (R voters/non-voters) don’t care about their own governance being competent and working in their best interest, that’s not a Democratic Brand Problem, that’s a Societal Problem.

I just want to put the suggestion out there that those saying Democrats must “show they understand the culture wars” by being mean to trans people and immigrants if they want to win…where I come from, that’s called “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em”, and hence is literally what losers do. No thanks.

I can’t get over the level of privilege involved with how society basically accepts the premise that it is Democrats’ responsibility to convince our adult population to not vote like recklessly irresponsible mean-spirited bullies.

Isn’t it the root problem that people need to be convinced of this?

With the obvious caveat that I am not pro-shooting people in the street…

The mainstream press came down extremely hard on those who took joy in the murder of the UHC CEO.

If only they came down even half as hard on the free-willed grown adults who voted for Donald Freaking Trump to be POTUS again.

I believe the public needs to change a lot more than Democrats do.

It is irresponsible and unsustainable the way most of our society pays little attention to politics and only remembers as much from their HS civics class as they do from their algebra class.

America needs an informed electorate.

We constantly call out media asymmetry in NYT & elsewhere (The ‘What’).

We hardly ever call out ‘The Why’ - a convenient set of standards for the 90% white party, an entirely different unfair set of standards for the side roughly representing the actual diversity of the country.

Silent Privilege™️.

If there’s one hill I will die on, it’s that this all comes down to America’s collective inability to be responsible grownups.

There needs to be less focus on lies from the top and more focus on the fact that so many free-willed grown-ass adults choose to believe lies and even demand to be lied to.

Just feel the need to remind everyone that Matt Gaetz was just re-elected to Congress two weeks ago despite these allegations being in the public record, Roy Moore almost got elected in Alabama, and Trump just got elected again.

We have a Republican voter problem in America. That’s the root of it.

Democrats need to be proud of who they are.

I’m the only person I know who says “I am a Democrat.” Everyone else qualifies it. “Lesser of two evils”, blah blah blah.

Fuck that. My party has a ton of good people in it. We do good things.

We need to stop apologizing and have some pride. Pass it on.
