Husband, Father and Grandfather. Trying to keep my ageing body fit (running when my legs don’t give up and cycling). Almost certainly Woke (whatever it really is).

Senior Solution Architect for Capgemini.

Post mainly about football and @LFC
He was never going to get another contract at #LFC

Nothing to do with his talent, just his age and cost of his contract

Expected to start … absolutely!! However if we’ve guaranteed anybody a starting place, we’ve made a huge mistake. It won’t have been done.

Perhaps I’ve misunderstood the sentiment of your post and focused too much on the words?

Mate, none of us knows the answers to that question. Try to pick a team from those who are fully available and there really aren’t so many options.

Personally, I agree about Macca who is a shadow of what he was and I wouldn’t start with Gakpo, but I kind of see how Konate is still being picked.

His salary is irrelevant really although it does set a level of expectation … one that he’s not yet been meeting this season
December 8, 2025 at 11:24 AM
No way that he (or anybody else) would have been guaranteed to start. For whatever reason, his form has been “flat” for most of the season.

With his AFCON absence so close and his poor form, I’m not surprised he was left out.

It makes sense if the plan was always to sell in summer 2026. No contract and he walks on a free … sign him up and there is almost certainly a significant fee.

That’s pretty much my view … just my opinion looking at what information is available.

I think the compromise over Mo’s contract (2 years but, no doubt more £££) meant that a sale in 2026 was always the Club’s plan.

“Paisley always called Rushy our first line of defence”

And Paisley was right … Rushie was one of our best ever defenders!!

I’m not so sure about Virgil. Some signings to strengthen the defence and it’s much easier for him to continue, being rested on more occasions and probably helping Leoni back into the team.

Also, less likely to get a big fee for Virgil. I think Mo was always going in the summer.

Not with a free agent move in the summer
December 7, 2025 at 10:33 PM
Gillett was undoubtedly the prime (certainly the initial) mover in the deal but he didn’t have the cash.

Pretty sure that Hicks just saw it as a money making opportunity

Absolutely!!

The more I think about it, even though Slot is under massive pressure, I think he’s bomb proof with FSG and the leadership team because they fucked up and left him to cope … and also face the press every week.

They’re not going to admit they’re responsible … Slot’s safe for another year

Slot to Hughes … “Bugger! We’re fucked!“

Hughes to Slot … “We’ll sort it in January/next summer. Can you work it out?”

Slot to Hughes … “Do I have any choice? I’ll do my best … it won’t be easy, we’re short in several positions”

I think Slot’s on shaky ground at the moment but I suspect Mo has just made it easier for him.

Consider the conversation that might have occurred on transfer deadline day.

Hughes to Slot … “sorry mate, Palace have pulled the plug on the Guehi transfer”.

That’s an issue. Steve Parish running his hands at the moment … ££££

I doubt Mo Salah was in on the plan” … after all, why would the Club tell him then that he would be sold in 2026 (my opinion/guess, not fact).

I suspect he just seen the writing on the wall … probably accelerated his exit as well

Sad all round

However, I doubt that was ever the Club’s plan. It was obvious to everyone that the massive investment in the summer was an incomplete rebuild … certainly Guehi was an unfortunate miss but, although the future was “mapped out” too many gaps were left.

Interesting that he talks about renewing and staying for two years. I suspect he did see it that way … he mentioned last year that his wife and kids like living in Liverpool, etc.

You’re right … but he certainly didn’t get any quicker towards the end of his career 😆
December 7, 2025 at 3:08 PM
But his legs have gone … he no longer outruns his fullback and that’s a big contributor to his lack of output.

Yes, the team is not setup to work to his strengths this season, but his powers are diminishing as he ages.

Carragher knows better than anyone what “legs have gone” looks like

It’s bloody scandalous!!

The right back situation certainly isn’t helping Konaté
