Body in the twin cities, mind in the 16th-early 20th century. Thomas Paine was robbed…and so were we.
Russell’s (long) essay certainly isnt the definitive work on these topics, but it’s a nice shorter read that’s more accessible than say, Frankfurt School writers or Ellul.

Sigh, im sorry - I should’ve found a site that didn’t give that warning – I’ve downloaded the PDF from there onto my phone and didn’t have any issues, but, of course that is no comfort coming from a stranger on the internet!

The essay is “the impact of science on society” by Bertrand Russell, 1953

But all the unitarian churches in the world aren’t gonna help if we let tech/capitalism continue to mint an avalanche of marginally civilized people. We know this shit is a “society killer”. Government is going to have to take these effects seriously.

Another excellent piece - and one that sets up a good discussion:

Hate has absolutely no qualms organizing society and building infrastructure to maintain and propagate its principles. Neither does religion. That shit WORKS.

Love/Egalitarianism needs to do the same.

Hamilton Nolan had a great piece on the Dallas megachurch communities. Hate has never been bashful about organizing infrastructure and society around its principles - love and egalitarianism
needs to do the same…otherwise we will keep mass producing assholes.

Absolutely corrosive. The sad part is how much has been written about how tech+capitalism will lead to these exact types of people…

Begging that government leaders (everyone, really) ask themselves Neil Postman’s questions before allowing/adopting any tech like this.

(Obvs there are more questions to
ask but this is a great start….especially considering that barely anyone is asking any questions before tech adoption!)

Absolutely.

I want to stay informed, be educated, and do whatever civic duty is needed to ensure my government functions like
my waste collection.

Aside from that, I want nothing to do with any of that shit…lemme life my life with my friends, neighbors and community.

These are all great but “Huge (pause) tracts of land” is my go to.

Looking forward to the gaps in the Bates numbers…* 😂

*I sure hope they were Bates numbered….

Grok (dot) gov

Excuse me while I vomit.

I’d swap the ensure out for cigarettes, but otherwise this is my dream shopping list at 88. 😂

1000%

All the time and energy that has been put into this fucking plague of a technology….

Cure HPV! Make a better air conditioner! Put a bank vacuum tube in my house that delivers soups!

Anything but this stupid, unwanted shit!

I’m sorry, Jessica. It always hurts to have a door close on your outstretched vulnerability…especially when if it happens ungraciously.

(Sent in kind commiseration…my parents were married in ‘58 and were together until they passed. I was a very late arrival.)

All we can do is remember they mean well… 😂

He’s right. I just hang out by the entrance of my local Waldenbooks, rock my double denim and listen to Dire Straits on my Walkman.

If a girl walks by, smiles and pulls the scrunchie out of her hair, I know the time
Is right to ask her to the roller rink.

It’s a rad way to meet bodacious babes.

Reading this is like watching in horror as someone with no pain receptors calmly drives a nail through their hand.

Only the complete absence of self-reflection could allow someone to write this without their head exploding

“How can these actions not make you scream in agony.” I wonder as I wince…

“We hold this market research to be self evident - that all (latest pie chart) are created (latest bar graph) and are endowed by (latest poll result) with certain (pundit opinion piece) rights. And among these are (corporate funding) (self interest) and (personal bias).”

And this is just capitalism at work.

Can you imagine a better customer than someone who has a giant hole inside of them created by fear, lack of agency and not belonging?

That hole inside of people is a market. The final step is to keep them ignorant enough to believe your product will solve it.

I’m all about the classics.

But we gotta make Neil Postman and Joseph Weizenbaum mandatory reading in 9th grade.

People need to have an understanding of how this stuff works and how it affects them.

Take comfort in the fact that this is one of those situations where - whether you are there in person on not - you are looking at something through a camera* :)

I checked with the ghosts of Carl Sagan and Neil Postman - they said this was okay.

(Obvi you could see a bit with your naked eye too)
November 12, 2025 at 2:41 PM
Excellent. We should have done this when the telegraph was first invented…and then repeated the process before the creation/adoption of any new tech.

The “donate” button should have been a clue!

Thank you, sir. Donation sent.

Hi Hamilton - other than subscribing to In These Times (which I have), is there another way to support you?

I’ve always been a huge fan of your work but jesus christ do we need your incisiveness more than ever…

*to clarify about Minima Moralia…it was an excellent book.

But it was like going from the occasional beer to having 20 lemon sharps in one sitting. 😆
