I'd wager many of them haven't. They grew up in the Northeast, attended prep school followed by an Ivy, then stepped directly into writing jobs at the NYT or WP. That leads to having some pretty skewed views of the way things are in the "real world."

This is spot-on. The media like to portray swing voters as savvy barometers of the political zeitgeist, when in fact they're mostly credulous dullards who base their vote on "gut feelings" and "stuff they seen on the Facebook."

Unless use-of-force guidelines changed dramatically at some point (or Illinois is an outlier, which seems doubtful), you're *never* supposed to strike someone in the head with a baton unless you're trying incapacitate or kill them.
