From an anthropological perspective, I think ritual and religion helped to create humanity, giving us culture, language, and art. People, alas, are people, but I don't think that we can discount the power of collective meaning to change the world. Sometimes for the better.

I think the secret is resigning yourself to only being able to read so much at a time. The interwebs tells us we can read Everything All At Once, but that, alas, is a lie. Reading slow is the new fast.
