Joshua, I know not why I write you now, only that sleep has refused to grace me with her touch, and it has left my mind full of our last meeting. How I wish I had known of your existence all these years, to have had the hope of it fluttering within my chest instead of the weight of your loss. Though I know to want for such a thing is a waste, for I cannot ask time to give me back those years. But you are here now. Miraculously. I must admit I was unsure of what to make of your arrival, as sudden and unexpected as a blossoming meadow in the depths of winter. Mostly because I could not yet make sense of what it stirred within me, as though you had awoken embers long gone cold within my heart. Hope, again, yes. And relief that you had somehow survived such tragedy. Yet, beneath that, something else. Who else, though, but the Phoenix, could bring fire to an ashen hearth? I thought I had known love, its touch gentle and secure, and I’ll admit now to a certain sense of guilt, Greagor forgive me, for allowing myself to want for more. I had thought you no more than a dream, a wish of memory, and as ever, life moved on and so must we all. So I did. But I am a fool, and now you keep me up at night, for I would have known you in any life. As I knew you the moment you walked into my tent. How I ache for a little more of your time, selfish though it may be. For us to speak of idle nothings as if the sun were not about to rise and call us once more to our duties. Eli grinned and set himself back against the knight’s chest more firmly. A small act, but making of himself something entirely and undeniably present. “Eli. I’d rather you call me that. Only you, though. I'm not too sure about the rest of them yet. And my point still stands. Also, I was quite correct about you being the fearsome sort.” That finally earned him a glance from the knight. Eli exhaled, the sound edging toward a whistle, low but unmistakably impressed. “You have a very intense stare.” A blink greeted that comment. Genuine surprise. The hand on his hip settled a little heavier against it like a bird finally committed to roosting.

They tell you you can't save everyone, but you still have to somehow save yourself each and every time
The truth is that I know how to save you. I’ve spent a lifetime learning how. There are the books I have studied and the blood on my hands because experience demands nothing less, and I know all the steps, so here is how you make the potion for forever, here is where salvation stands, and then the moment comes, and there is a brief second where your gaze meets mine and we both know that there is nothing more, and all the magic turns to ash, and experience says here is another lesson, and I still know that I can save you, I can, but your fingers slip from mine and all at once everything is too cold, too hot, too everything but you.

And we knew it then, when the songbird forgot how to sing, that not everything makes it back in one piece
He has the window down, and there’s a song on the radio, one he loves, and he opens his mouth, but nothing comes out like all the lyrics had buried themselves in the desert passing us by, and we both knew that only death waited for the things the desert ate, and I wanted to tell him we were leaving this place, but he closed his mouth then, and the music stopped.

A sea of red, but when they ask about the bleeding, you just smile and say there are things far worse than a little blood lost, the sort of stuff you can always come back from but never quite the same, like the sun forgot to shine in certain places so you learn how to navigate the dark until the dark finds a little place inside of you to call home, but even if the sun forgets, he says, there are stars and they are beautiful.

Jason remains my favorite DC character, so I thought I'd share some of my poetic ramblings inspired by him/for him. I may add to this thread as the day goes along 💕
I don’t want to talk about the thing that broke me. I can, but there’s a joke lying in wait behind my tongue for that conversation, and I don’t think I want to laugh until the bitterness drowns the sound. I want to remember instead what laughter actually sounds like, the way it sounded before I saw the heroes die, the way it was before I became the hero.

It’s the way they talk about how fast they all grow up, not realizing there’s a boy over there whom the world threw heart first into the ocean and told him that drowning is also part of living, and how he came to be with water in his lungs, part shadow, all shadow, some days more, others less, wondering how sharks were left swimming in the streets, and how there are days he feels the water drying up, leaving him to breathe fire and misery instead. It hurts. And he thinks that maybe everything burns, was always burning, each moment simply waiting for another phoenix to rise so that someone somewhere down the line can say it all had meaning in the end. It still hurts. But he reaches for the stars, they all do down here, and he still can’t forget the way the moon made magic of his life and how the words leapt off the pages, pulling him into places he never thought he could go, just like that name bigger than any of his dreams had ever been. He was once sunlight on midnight’s wings, and there had been dirt on his feet and hunger in his stomach, but there stood another door, shattered glass mostly. But open is open, you know. You see the streets had taught him that, a different lesson from the world and her ocean, and you took opportunities before they crowded around your grave and wept for all you’d never been. He’d never been much. Oh, but he believed it for a moment, maybe a little more. Time gets funny when memory starts talking, but he remembers the water in his chest and the heaviness of trying to breath (again), not quite as bad as the knowing, how all things move, keep moving, and there are some firebirds better left fizzling out in the ashes. More potential for the burying. He could have been everything. They cry over that, too, he’s realized. That’s what some of them say, anyway. Dead is dead, but you knew that, right? He’s still got a heart beating in his chest, though.

In the end that should have been, we begin again.
You and I, two stars crashing out of orbit, heading for an end that seemed inevitable, final, until our trajectories collided and sent us spiraling out of demise and into something new and bright, fragments of ourselves embedded in the other and we became something more than the falling that brought us together, something beyond all we had ever imagined.

This is no once in a lifetime affair. It is love in every universe, from here until the stars bleed out, your heart as mine.
But a world without you? There is no world without you. I would drown the very depths of Hades itself so it could never claim your hand. Its rivers no more. Its fields swallowed. Death has no right to the heart already delivered to me. Should he try to rend from me you, my own soul, I would make him a shade of this waking world.

You kissed him. There is promise in that. Love. You do not kiss what does not carry meaning. Eli stopped then and turned to face the wall. Is that what Fia told her in all his talks of kisses and kissing? The corner of his mouth curved upward as a smirk, vicious with his frustration, made itself known. “Kisses aren’t just about being in love or even caring about someone, my darling wolf. They can be quite dangerous, you know.” Eli felt his heart plunge forward, as if in a hurry to leave his own chest. The smirk cut in deeper. He curled his fingers in toward his palms and tried not to laugh, a sickening sense of understanding pooling in his gut as he studied the shadows, as he turned over Kuunojäk’s words. “Judging from this whole mess, I’d say kisses may as well be an act of warfare.” Her laughter ran through him again. “This isn’t funny. Your dear knight wants me dead.” He does. And he does not. Death will find you either way, though, shadow-child. Pain bore a hole in his side. Something hot and wet drenched his hip. Fia’s hand flew to it, expecting the worst, but when he drew his hand back, there was nothing. No blood. No wound. His clothes perfectly intact. The world snapped into focus again around him. At the end of the hall, a stairwell rose to the floor above, its steps bathed in a gentle yellow light. That was right. He was heading there. To where Eli was. Upstairs. Somewhere. He had to kill him. Kiss him. Hunt him. Bury him. Save him.

He was everything, and he was mine
When I tell you that I loved him, I do not mean in a blood and bones sort of way, even though he was the one who cracked open his ribs and showed me his heart, though not a single name marred its skin. I loved him as one loves the stardust that lines our veins, as some integral part of who I was and who I would come to be, and I could not forget him any more than the universe could forget the galaxies that called her home.

Everything goes to red with you, and I can taste the blood on my teeth from where I bit you, can taste it in the gasp you didn’t want to let out but did because you wanted this more than me, but you couldn’t say that either even though your fingers left my throat for parts more sensitive, my heart and deeper, so you see I bled, am bleeding for you too.
