Weird to write this right before billboard changes their charts again because streaming still isn’t giving an accurate picture
Billboard Billboard announced it will begin messing with its flagship chart yet again, as the economics of streaming have allowed songs to persist on the Hot 100 well beyond their initial blast of popularity. The evolution of the chart through the decades means that a list originally expressing popular singles with actual sales has become an amalgam of streaming and radio spins. This has had the effect of rewarding inoffensively popular songs that have a relatively high streaming floor with record-setting runs on the charts, such as “Blinding Lights” remaining on the chart for 90 weeks. Until this week, Billboard bumped a song from the Hot 100 if it fell below No. 25 after 52 weeks or below No. 50 after 20 weeks. Now the criteria is getting tighter, and songs will fall from the charts if they drop below No. 5 after a year and a half (78 weeks), below No. 10 after 25 weeks and below No. 50 after 52 weeks. — Under new management: To start, a major U.S. supplier of electronic voting hardware and software was sold earlier this month to a Missouri-based company headed by a GOP ex-election official, centralizing a major portion of power over U.S. election infrastructure to one firm. Dominion Voting Systems is one of the country’s largest providers of voting machines and tabulators, and was used by 27 states during the 2024 election. Dominion was also at the center of baseless far-right conspiracy theories about the 2020 presidential election being rigged. Scott Leiendecker — who previously served as the Republican director for the St. Louis City Board of Elections — will head the company, which has been rebranded as Liberty Vote. Dominion’s sale came as a surprise to many in the election security community, which only found out about the change of hands through a press release once it was finalized, according to David Becker, executive director of the nonprofit Center for Election Innovation and Research. “I think the way this was rolled out raised a lot of questions about what the new owner intends to do and how well it will service its existing customers,” Becker told reporters during a press briefing on the sale last week. “I’ve talked to many election officials … and I can’t find any who were contacted beforehand.” Leiendecker reportedly met with election officials in Colorado last week to discuss the sale and his plans for Liberty Vote, which include a shift toward the use of paper ballots and third-party auditing. But Democratic lawmakers, some election officials and security experts previously told your host that a move to paper ballots could cause delays in election results and distrust in the voting process. Despite initial concerns about transparency regarding the sale, Becker cautioned against making assumptions this early. “It’s also important to note that this changes nothing with regard to election integrity,” he said. “The same technology that was used before the sale is going to be used after the sale.” — Cuts on cuts: There have also been major cuts to election security programs, personnel and funding at CISA under the Trump administration, which some worry could weaken the nation’s ability to detect threats to our election systems. The cuts include millions of dollars in funding for the Election Infrastructure Sharing and Analysis Center, which provided guidance and technical assistance to election offices on a variety of cyber threats. Wesley Wilcox, supervisor of elections for Marian County, Fla., told your host that election workers across the country heavily relied on the EI-ISAC for crucial, real-time cyber threat sharing and response that election offices don’t have the capacity to do entirely on their own. “My read is that federal funding for election infrastructure has basically gone away,” he said. “If I were a bad guy, either domestic or international, this to me looks like an opportunity.”

President Donald Trump signed an executive order last week directing the government to find faster treatments for pediatric cancer using artificial intelligence, but Climatewire’s Ariel Wittenberg reports the administration is simultaneously repealing regulations that could prevent cancer in Americans to begin with. How’s that? It’s estimated that regulations of bromide and carcinogen emissions would avoid almost 100 cases of bladder cancer and lower the rate of people at increased risk of air toxic-related cancer, according to Environmental Protection Agency documents and analyses. The Trump administration has weakened, canceled or delayed such regulations. What does the administration say? Administration officials backed repealing the regulations, citing the need to increase electricity that can power AI data centers, which are used to look for cancer cures. Board certification Paul was certified by the ABO from 1995 until 2005, when his certification lapsed. He chose not to renew his certification, citing a disagreement with the organization's policy. He objected to the fact that ophthalmologists certified before 1992 were grandfathered in with lifetime certification, while those certified after 1992 were required to recertify every 10 years. In response, he founded his own alternative organization, the National Board of Ophthalmology (NBO), to offer a different certification process. The NBO is not recognized as an accrediting entity by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS).

Feels irresponsible to refer to Rand Paul as a physician in relation to discussions on vaccines when he’s actually an eye doctor that couldn’t get certified and created his own licensing board.
With her steady demeanor, Monarez served as the poised yin to Kennedy’s agitated yang at a similar hearing before the Senate Finance Committee earlier this month — the one where he called her a liar, among other things. GOP senators who are critical of vaccines, or at least the timing and number of vaccines and any mandates to take them, like Rand Paul of Kentucky and Roger Marshall of Kansas, both physicians, said their part.
