We should always be balancing the competing needs for safety and autonomy—and not simply adopt the widespread institutional approach of elimination of risk at any cost to individuality. Life is risky. Autonomy and individuality are priceless, the foundation of dignity.

It is not surprising that people who are experiencing the loss of rational thought are afraid, embarrassed and frustrated. If we understand this and find ways to support their rational thought losses as well as meet their emotional needs, there is less stress.

As care partners, we should always be looking for ways to enable our friends with #dementia to retain as much control as possible, and to make choices as much as possible. Dignity is lost when choice is taken away.

Articulate cyclist Peter Berry was diagnosed with Alzheimer's at 50. Though he has struggled, he continues to demonstrate that life isn't over with dementia, it's just a little different. Check out this video:
