NEW EPISODE: @msfsea.bsky.social’s Juan Matias Gil tells us how the Italian government made it impossible for the medical charity to use its Geo Barents rescue ship.

He also tells us about MSF’s new rescue vessel, the Oyvon –and what happened on its first rescue mission.

Today, our Sea-Watch 5 rescued 34 people, including 10 minors. While this is a win against Fortress Europe, the 🇮🇹 government is once again trying to prevent us from saving lives by assigning us the port of la Spezia, far away from the rescue zone. We demand a closer port now.

❌ No way! We will not collaborate with anyone who uses violence against refugees and breaks human rights. As a result, we have suspended all operational communication with the Libyan authorities, in accordance with international law and together with the #JusticeFleet. 1/3

We need a closer port now! Last night, our Aurora rescued 48 people after an alert from @alarmphone.bsky.social. Soon after, we assisted a second boat with 29 survivors, taken on board by the Italian coastguard. After the 2 cases, fuel is low & our assigned port in Augusta, Sicily, is far.

Now, due to financial constraints, @ifrc.org must end its mission onboard the Ocean Viking.

For four years, SOS MEDITERRANEE and IFRC worked side by side to support people rescued from one of the world’s deadliest sea routes. This partnership managed to get people at risk to a place of safety.

24 humanitarians are on trial in Greece today, facing felony charges for saving lives. This is a disgrace. Humanitarian support defends people on the move and international law when the EU won’t. If this trial goes south, human rights are on the brink. @ec.europa.eu #DropTheCharges
