As masked federal agents target street vendors on Canal Street, THE CITY watched one street vendor being detained.

Li was formerly the co-owner of the New World Mall, which played a prominent role as a fundraising site for Adams’ 2021 mayoral campaign.

In 2023, THE CITY and Documented spoke to donors who said they did not donate to the mayor’s campaign at fundraisers held at the hub.

Data obtained by the Deportation Data Project from a Freedom of Information Act request shows that ICE exceeded its own capacity restriction, on at least six nights since late May, when ICE arrests in New York City and across the country started spiking.

Half of all immigration court arrests nationwide were in New York City in late May and early June, according to a new analysis of federal immigration court and ICE data.

During the month of June, an average of 89 people were detained inside 26 Federal Plaza each night, the data shows.

The number of detentions peaked on June 5, when 186 people were held there overnight.
