The void Lucanis left gaped, no matter how she tried to fill it. First with an endless parade of glowering, human Antivans, but the similarities made the ache all the worse. Next with flirtations from lords and ladies—real ones, not ones whose titles were half joke and half threat—who thought Ceridwen's proximity to the Crows a bit of harmless spice. Most she left after a few boring dalliances, and the ones who held her interest for more than a month invariably died in mysterious but gruesome circumstances, so those invitations stopped.

I love writing Ceridwen's first impressions of people, she's such a little hater. She ends up good friends with Emmrich and never, ever tells him what her snap judgment of him was
Fic wip snippet By all rights, she should hate the man on sight. Emmrich Volkarin, at your service, in his fancy Nevarran accent, waving his staff with the jade skull mounted on top and sipping tea served by a skeletal servant. The epitome of a pampered mage who's never had to fear the Chantry or scrape up falling-apart old editions of Beyond the Veil: Spirits and Demons from booksellers charging double what they're worth. At least he's not Tevinter, but on the other hand, at least Neve doesn't live in the lap of luxury. This Professor Volkarin has probably never paid three coppers for a hunk of bread topped with a scoop of stewed meat trimmings; he'd sniff at the thought and throw the whole plate into the trash. If only he weren't so nice.

Lucanis, holding her after the latest round of nightmares. Anchoring her to sanity with his soft beard against her cheek, his hands on her ribcage while her heart tries to beat itself out of her chest. Every night in his arms is another night she’s grateful she outlived the gods. Life would be simpler if she loved him a little less. Or: The gods are dead, the world's a mess, no one is happy about the new Talon, and Rook's haunted by regret. Rook, Spite, and Lucanis figure out how to live despite it all.
