Some good granular analysis here of the sheer unfairness of this situation from The Barking Cat Alehouse in Poole. Independent venues appear to be bearing the brunt of some downright egregious RV increases. The price of a pint of cask there ranges from £4.50-£5.60. How long before the minimum is £6?

Looking back, yes, the praise was universal (Stephen Dalton in NME gave it 9/10), but as this review in Melody Maker 3/9/94 shows, at a time when there was a very saleable diet of white guitar bands (Oasis, Manics, Suede) taking up column inches, they knew it wouldn’t instantly appeal to everyone.

His memory might have been a tad selective on some of the 70s line ups, but having looked at some of the 90s ones, he probably was justified with that criticism.
Mind you, I can’t imagine that he didn’t have a say on the comedians who came on Squares in the 90s.
