I was only a kid but remember it quite vividly. Old man worked the show. Really set me on the path.

Oh, believe me, I still go back to certain shows. But how did I decide to start listening through all Dead concerts in sequence? I guess I felt it was just time and that the journey would be revealing, so I jumped in one day. I still have a very long ways to go. I’m only (“only”) in April 1969.

TBD! I’m leaning toward keeping this purely, strictly Dead, and then working through the side/adjacent projects after. But we’ll see if the pathological completionist in me wins out in this current run.

But I will say this: I’ll be perfectly fine if I never have to hear “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl” again for the rest of my life. And I also have some real “Lovelight” fatigue. I know, I know—I’m sorry, Pig!

It’s been fun! I have no idea how long it’ll take, and frankly I don’t care. I’m not treating it like homework. If something catches my ear, I’ll jot it down. Really I’m just letting the shows wash over me and not overthinking shit. It’s the Dead, man!

So that’s the current listening project. (As of writing, I’m at 4/11/69; I’m including rehearsal tapes, too.) I’m not the first to embark on the journey. Much of the experience so far has reaffirmed what I already know—namely, the band’s progression in just the first few years is beyond words.

Thanks for spending time with the book and for the kind words! Means a lot.
