1 in 4 people have a disability. The language used about us MATTERS to us/families/caregivers/siblings/friends/neighbors. The R-word is harmful. When we choose respect over the R-word, we create a world where everyone is seen/heard/valued. Respect is no joke. It’s time we treat it that way.
The only R-word we know is respect. The Arc of the US Facebook Post 1 in 4 Americans have a disability. The language used about us MATTERS. It matters to us and to our families, caregivers, siblings, friends, and neighbors. The R-word isn’t a punchline—it’s harmful. When we choose respect over the R-word, we create a world where everyone is seen, heard, and valued. Respect is no joke, and it’s time we started treating it that way.

Special Ed Day is 12/2 & marks the anniversary of IDEA, which was signed into law in 1975. This opened the door to a free & appropriate public ed for millions of kids w/ disabilities. This day reminds us-students w/ disabilities deserve a safe place to learn/grow. We must protect that right.
Every child can learn. Every child can thrive. The Arc of the US Facebook Post Tomorrow is National Special Education Day. Fifty years ago, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) became law. This opened the door to a free and appropriate public education for millions of children with disabilities. Before IDEA, about 1.75 million children with disabilities were excluded from public schools. Today, many more students learn in their neighborhood schools alongside non-disabled peers. Inclusive classrooms strengthen learning for everyone, promote understanding, and help build connections. The need for strong special education systems is crucial. When key federal offices that support IDEA aren't fully staffed, states miss out on important guidance. This can put students with disabilities at risk of not getting the services and support they need. National Special Education Day reminds us that students with disabilities deserve a safe place to learn and grow. We must protect that right. Special Education Day is celebrated on December 2. It marks the anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which was signed into law in 1975. IDEA requires states to provide early intervention and special education services to kids with disabilities, from birth through age 21.
