Play it Steve! RIP Steve Cropper

If you can learn all of Steve's parts, that's all you'll ever need to be a great guitarist. Forget about the songwriting - you can't do that.

Chairs Missing (1978, Harvest)

I was late coming to Wire. Shame. Better late than never. This album is a ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ throwdown!
Post-punk Saturday night special here. F the neighbors.

Life hack: Nothing saves a dreary, rainy Saturday afternoon like hypnotic synthesizers & drum machines.

Robert Gordon
with Link Wray (1977, Private Stock)

Picked up a couple of dollar-bin beauts this weekend. The debut of the charismatic rockabilly revivalist featuring legendary guitar lunatic. So much heart & soul. Wow!!!

More Intensified! Original Ska 1963-1967
(1980, Mango)

Incredible (2 volume) compilations of the greatest Jamaican Ska groups of the mid-60s. Mango Records was the Caribbean imprint of Island Records. #vinyl #nowspinning #fridayvibes

Is Rockpile - Seconds Of Pleasure a qualifying release? It seems like it should be, but there might be a gray area. If "yes" its in my T5 for sure. 🎸🥁

Super fantastic LP!
Recording & touring with your spouse? I saw them on this tour and there seemed to be a few seconds of....something. It was great!

The Golden Palominos
s/t (1983, OAO)

A veritable who's who of funky post punk oddballs: Anton Fier, Arto Lindsay, John Zorn, Bill Laswell, Fred Firth, the professor & Maryanne...
This LP hits hard in surprising ways 42 years on.
Let's see some ID!!!

RIP John Lodge

Even though the Moody Blues were hugely successful in their 60s-70s heydey, and again in the 80s, their legacy seems overshadowed by their (lesser) contemporaries. I don't understand it. Now with John's death only Justin Hayward remains.☹️

Steve Reich
Music For 18 Musicians (1998/2015)

This American genius achieved 89 years on Friday.
Originally composed/recorded in the mid-70s, Nonesuch got the gang back for a fresh recording of "18" in 1998 for CD release. (LP in 2015)
This is among the greatest works of American music. #vinylsky

Yoko Ono
Fly (1971, Apple)

Relative to the subsequent 50+ years of unconventional recordings, this LP holds up as a landmark of experimental music. Easy to understand that it felt a bit shocking in 71. Fearless. Excellent. #vinylsky #nowspinning

The Ramsey Lewis Trio
The In Crowd (1965, Cadet/Argo)

Based on the popularity of the title track, both LP & single topped the charts 60 years ago along with Help! and I Got You Babe, and all the rest from that spectacular year. We need more funky instrumentals on the charts.

Pere Ubu
Terminal Tower (1985, TwinTone)

Angular proto-punk compilation of their earliest non-album tracks, 1975-1980. A masterpiece of oddball future vision. Or something...

RIP Flo ☹️

Mark Volman has leveled up. The ultimate high harmony voice, story teller, & tambourine juggler. He & Howard Kaylan (Eddie) were responsible for some of the greatest California pop music of all time.

RIP Connie Francis

She died a couple of days ago. I was a bit surprised that she was still with us TBH, but I shouldn't have been because she was tough as nails. Anyway, this 1963 compilation on MGM is my favorite greatest hits album ever. Don't let the ridiculous cover fool you.

Dionne Warwick
The Windows Of The World
(1967, Scepter)

The songs of Bacharach & David are so oddly phenomenal. It took a superstar like Dionne to really make them shine and completely own the schizophrenic vibe of mid-60s popular music.

June Christy
Something Cool (1954, Capitol)

June & Pete Rugolo were 2 recent escapees from Stan Kenton's exhausting treadmill. This is their 1st collab on a JC solo record. All the smoke, shadows, & dark innuendo of a Raymond Chandler femme fatale.

Jean-Luc Ponty
Upon The Wings Of Music (1975, Atlantic)

Other than the stuff he recorded w/ Zappa, I have no real feel for this dude's music, but this LP is killer. Avant-funk space-jazz. Or something. I may need to get another one.

The Byrds
Younger Than Yesterday (1967, Columbia)

It's only in the last 3 or 4 years that I started to pay attention to The Byrds. Obv I was familiar with the hits, but no more. Turns out, they were great. It's great to discover an amazing catalog from ancient history.

Kurt Weill, Bertolt Brecht, Lotte Lenya
The Threepenny Opera

Originally performed in 1928, Lotte Lenya wanted to recreate the original with as many of the og performers as she could find in 1958. She did it. It is beyond amazing. She also did the same with Mahogany.
