At a deep tech summit someone claimed Africa lacks investment potential. I disagree. The Global South is rich in #innovation, resilience & grassroots power. We may not be flashy, but we’re solving real problems with real impact. Don’t confuse modest means with limited vision.

This sadly has far-reaching consequences. So far, it’s a whole OCEAN far. A sad day too for medical research/ers in South Africa.
Devastating for scientists and their research, and everyone who benefits from that research.

I’m not sure if everyone outside academia is aware that a delay or “pause” in grant funding often means the researchers themselves are lost from the field, along with their expertise.
NIH appears to have canceled/postponed all of its study sections—the independent review panels that approve federal grants for health research.

Such grants fund the work/salaries of 300k people at more than 2,500 institutions

“The two most powerful weapons are patience and time.” - Tolstoy

For anyone that knows me, patience is my Achilles heel. So, I’m treating 2025 as an #experiment: adopt positive changes, kick old habits, find my new rhythm, & adjust my expectations.

In saying this, please share some good #books 🙏

#wayfarerwednesday As a plant lover, Singapore was heaven! But I digress. Importing >90% of their food, they’re esp. vulnerable to global issues. It’s making great strides in precision farming, aquaculture, & alt. protein. The recent SAP is 1 of many plans designed to support local #innovation

I gleaned nothing new, & although it oversimplifies complex global systems, the “Buy Now!” documentary is a compelling exposé on #consumerism & corporate greed & laziness. The trickle down of responsibility to consumers is deplorable, making me wonder how meaningful change can be achieved beyond us.

Peace out 2024, it was one helluva year in so many ways!

Here’s to another solar rotation filled with exciting projects, innovation and more adventures.

Happy 2025, folks! Let’s make it count in every way possible 🚀

Ever since the 1st movie came out when I was 8 yo, it was mine & my dad’s plan to one day visit NZ & see where the #LOTR was filmed. FFW MANY years later: although he is no longer with us, the pure unadulterated joy I felt visiting Hobbiton I am sure was felt wherever he is now.

My go-to #Christmas movies:

1. Love Actually
2. The LOTR trilogy (because there’s never NOT a season for it)
3. The Grinch (obvs)
4. Elf
5. National Lampoon’s Xmas Vacation

Pretty vanilla list (mayhaps?), but I’ll happily die on this hill.

Curious to know others’ top holiday flicks - do share!

How lucky am I?
A foster fail that stole my heart. Evie is the gentlest soul I’ve ever known. Whether it’s her sweet nuzzle after a long day or her goofy antics that make me laugh, she makes life infinitely better and whole.
I couldn’t imagine my life without the magic and love a dog brings.

#FunFactFriday The mantis shrimp punches faster than a bullet. Their claws strike at speeds of 80 kmph, enough to break glass tanks. They also have the most complex eyes in the #animal kingdom, which contain 16 types of photoreceptors, compared to the 3 in humans - making them formidable predators.

#Throwback to BBV Pitch Day 2023, where, during the Q&A, I confidently began answering, only to declare I had a “brain fart” mid sentence.
Not my finest moment, but hey, we did eventually win people over. Proof that even the cringiest slips can’t sink good ideas!
