It seems like every time I start a book in Jim Butcher’s Codex Alera series, I end up kicking myself for waiting so long. I read the fifth book in December of last year and now I’m finally on the sixth and final book, barking out “GodDAMN!” every couple chapters. Loving it so far. #books

I felt okay about posting my 2025 reading stats today because I know I won’t be finishing these two before Wednesday. I started Jim Butcher’s FIRST LORD’S FURY (ebook) and James Clavell’s SHOGUN (audiobook). #books

Reading stats: My goal was to read 60 #books in 2025 and I read 151. The breakdown was 75 ebooks and 76 audiobooks. You could shave 10-15 off that number if you count omnibus editions as one book instead of multiple titles, but I don’t. My goal will stay at 60 in 2026.

Not a bad year for reading.

Erik J. Brown's BETTER THE DEVIL is an great YA thriller. A gay kid from West Virginia runs away from his nutty religious parents and after months of homelessness assumes the identity of a missing boy. But the new family has its own issues... Really effective tale of murder and found family. #books

I’m adjusting my reading habits in 2026. I need less structure and more mood reading, and to stop treating the end of a calendar month like it actually means anything. I have some thick #books I want to read without trying to race an arbitrary finish date.

My #FridayReads update… I’m 63% of the way through an ARC of Erik J. Brown’s BETTER THE DEVIL. I also finished listening to Rick Riordan’s THE LAST OLYMPIAN. I doubt I’ll finish anything else before Wednesday, so that will put my total #books read this year at 150.

For the final movie in my Christmas shift marathon, it's The Long Kiss Goodnight. I'm pretty sure I watched this one last year, too.
December 26, 2025 at 1:33 AM
Fourth movie in my Christmas shift marathon is The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. I'm watching the animated version from 1979, so I don't have to worry about impure thoughts of James McAvoy as Mr. Tumnus. Okay, maybe a few impure thoughts...

Christmas marathon movie #3: Gremlins. I was obsessed with this movie when I was a kid, and I still love it.

My movie marathon continues with Christmas List. This is a Hallmark movie starring Alicia Witt. I choose to believe her character is a mentally unhinged serial killer dropping bodies all over this idyllic town in her quest for a perfect Christmas experience. I watch it every year.

Working the holiday and kicking off my Christmas movie marathon with Batman Returns.

I started a new Animal Crossing island and named it Arkham. There’s plenty of time to settle in before the update arrives next month. Tank is one of my starting villagers, just like my original game. #ACNH #gaming

Today I learned The Skipper from "Gilligan's Island" had an actual name... Jonas Grumby. That sounds more like a Batman villain.

I’m downloading Animal Crossing to the Switch 2 and trying to decide if I want to transfer my island or start a new one and just move items over as needed. It would take a lot of time and effort to move and rebuild my portrait gallery and fish and insect model museums. #gaming

The Switch 2 from my friend has gone from “Borrow it until the next time I visit” to “Actually, if you’re planning to buy one in the next two years, just keep that one and you can pay me whenever.” He used it maybe ten hours in six months and I beat that in two days.

So now I own a Switch 2.

I tried out the Switch 2’s GameChat feature last night while playing Stardew Valley with Sam. We didn‘t use video and stuck with audio and screen sharing. It was cool watching him in the mines while I was fishing. We’ll be using that instead of Discord from now on. Nicely done, Nintendo.

It's strange to have such a strong reaction, but seeing Superman, freed of his ennui and deconstructions just *be Superman* in the hands of an actor and director who understand what that means was glorious, like meeting the character fresh.

My first time using a Switch 2, and the screen feels almost comedically oversized. It’s like someone attached my iPad Mini to a controller grip. I have a feeling this will be played on the TV in docked mode about 95% of the time.

My #FridayReads update... I'm about 25% of the way through an ARC of Erik J. Brown's upcoming YA novel BETTER THE DEVIL. I'm also nearing the end of S.A. Cosby's ALL THE SINNERS BLEED (audiobook) and should finish it tomorrow. #books

If YouTube needs hosts for the 2029 Oscars, might I suggest Dan and Phil?

Oscars moving from ABC to YouTube. That'll be fun.

Bookish PSA: Digital versions of S.A. Cosby's ALL THE SINNERS BLEED, RAZORBLADE TEARS, and BLACKTOP WASTELAND are on sale today for $2.99. Aaron H. Aceves' THIS IS WHY THEY HATE US is on sale as well. #books

It's a limited rollback, letting publishers decide if you can download the books you bought instead of locking them all down, but I'll take what I can get. I prefer reading my Kindle library on my Kobo Clara Colour. #books
Amazon Plans to Sometimes, in Some Cases, Let You Download Your E-books Again
Maybe we can finally own the e-books we buy.

I started reading Ed McBain's THE MUGGER, the second novel in his 87th Precinct series. I don't know if I'll keep up with this challenge of reading one a month until the series is complete, but I'm still enjoying myself. #books
