Thinking about Black queer & trans people especially youth in Waterloo Region and the erasure they experience in the Black community. An erasure that forces them into hiding in schools, puts them at risk of being “outed” as “payback”. The community wld rather make excuses than hold these children.

I hadn’t delegated in many years but Arts Build Ontario’s Meanwhile Spaces initiative resonates quite deeply with me. I was reminded of the political violence, the expectation of trauma sharing and victimhood narratives of the most advantaged in the room.

Just building more housing, on its own, will be insufficient because without stronger tenant protections, nothing will stop people from being pushed out of their homes whenever it becomes expedient for their landlord to do so. It won’t ensure-that the new housing being built is safe and habitable.
Skyrocketing rents are driven by greed, by a desire to gouge tenants for as much as possible because they are desperate and have nowhere else to turn. And gentrification, the so-called revitalization of cities, is what makes those skyrocketing rents possible.
