There are usually talks about what is currently visible and some hot cocoa/hot cider stations to warm people. This helps it be more exciting and builds interest. While I am a photographer myself, I know a lot of people lose interest long before I am done shooting.

I know that "Dark Sky Nights" at the Grand Canyon can have a large attendance. They are planned well in advance and have several telescopes set up for people to view through. Some with monitors so that people don't have to look in the scopes and/or can take pictures.
