I'm starting to notice the following message at the bottom of articles submitted to the journal I edit:
"This article used AI tools for grammar and copy editing".
Thoughts? I think that this is fine as I also use AI to check my grammar, so it feels like it's fine.

I know this is the type of self-serving stuff that fits LinkedIn better, but over the last few months I've been getting messages over there from students at other universities telling me that they really enjoyed my articles. I'm flattered, but I have to wonder why now?

I'm trying to think when was the last time that I attended an academic event and I honestly don't know when. There are a few reasons why, mostly lack of funds, but I also find large conferences increasingly useless.
I do miss smaller events for networking, but find it more difficult to make time.

Reading a document has me going like this.
Writing is weird. I keep seeing some of my ideas make their way into legal documents, not always attributed, but I don't mind. Yesterday I dropped a bomb, an idea so simple yet so devastating that I wondered if anyone would notice. And today someone picked it up. Now we see if it sticks.

I'm sometimes copied in an email from a deranged person who claims to have found a fatal flaw in one piece of legislation which brings down the entire edifice of law. This type of thinking is also prevalent in "Freemen of the Land" and sovereign citizen circles, and I've always found it fascinating.

Rumour has it that Getty Images v Stability AI will be out later today. This case is about trade marks, database rights, and secondary infringement, the direct infringement side was dropped. Honestly, I'm not sure what to expect, but I would be surprised if the TM claims were successful.

Sigh, I was supposed to be flying today to Zagreb for a film festival to talk about AI and copyright, and then I was also supposed to give a paper at CODAIP following Ryan Abbott. Cancelled both. Damn this stupid illness.

I'm surprised how far we've come in the last 3 years in the AI copyright space. The subject used to be discussed by a few nerds on Twitter, and it has now exploded into a full-on content environment with BREAKING alerts and so many authoritative sources, you can't miss a development.

My covid came with a laryngitis chaser, I can only speak very short sentences. I work with my voice, so I had to cancel classes and next week I had 3 presentations and a trip to Zagreb, which looks like I'll also have to cancel.

People keep putting too much faith in whatever they think will be the next “silver bullet” to kill AI development. Copyright once filled that role, and when that didn’t pan out, they pinned their hopes on the “AI bubble” narrative mostly pushed by a handful of influencers.

The UK has a messed-up funding culture, and don't get me started on the REF.
After submitting a FOIA request UKRI, I obtained success rates by three grant call scheme and I can only say that I am disheartened by the results:
- AHRC Responsive Mode 2025: 2%
- ESRC New Investigator Grant 2025: 1%
- ESRC Research Grant Round 2025: 1%
- AHRC Responsive Mode 2025: 2%

ID cards is one of those subjects that I am mostly at odds with colleagues and friends in the UK. As someone who has had an ID card all his adult life in Costa Rica, I find them extremely useful in all sorts of situations, I think that many Europeans feel the same.
